We liked it so much last year, we’re going back again-but this time to 20 days at sea. I sure hope Michael brought his nausea meds this time. Neither JP Caponigro, Stephen Johnson, Seth Resnick nor I got sea-sick…we had our MEDS! (and a boatload of extra vino as well). You can see last year’s Antarctic Trip Report as well as visit the Feature Story: Antarctic Expedition
I’m going to TRY to post SOMETHING from down-under…but we will only have a satellite phone modem, so it won’t be long or have a lot of images. Besides, we’re going to be busy shooting! I’ll be back at the end of February, so in the meantime, check out Lightroom-News.com our new sister site where Martin and Sean will be posting.
See ya. . .

I’ll be traveling to San Francisco to attend Bruce’s Tribute. I may be able to post pictures as well as several videos later in the week including a very good chance of seeing me in a kilt. Yes, I said kilt-Bruce always said they were comfortable, we’ll see. Later, I’ll be on the road to San Antonio again for PPA’s Imaging 2007, so I’ll be a busy boy.

An End User’s Champion, Fraser’s Contributions to the Digital Imaging and Desktop Color Industry will be Celebrated in an Upbeat, Inspirational Multimedia Event on January 10
Press Release: January 2, 2007 – San Francisco – Visual arts connoisseur, proud and humorous Scotsman, masterful musician, tireless digital imaging scientist and author, and peaceful Buddhist with more than a passing fancy for astronomy — Bruce Fraser was a renaissance man whose most outstanding characteristic was his humanity.

I’m leaving for Toronto, Canada on Tuesday to join Michael Reichmann of the Luminous Landscape to shoot our Adobe Photoshop Lightroom DVD tutorial. Some of you may remember the story I did about The Making of the Lighroom DVD last August.
Well, the observant among you might be able to deduce that since we’re shooting our Lightroom 1.0 DVD, the release of Lightroom won’t be too far off (remember, Beta 4 is designed to cease Feb, 2007). The “observant” would probably be correct :~)
So, I’ll be a little light in posts this week…I will be posting final details of the Industry Celebration and Tribute to Bruce Fraser scheduled for January 10, 2007 from 6:00PM – 7:30PM at Macworld Expo.
Here’s a brief description: In the world of digital color and imaging, few can claim the myriad contributions to product innovation, development and end user education that belong to Bruce Fraser. The principal author of the best-selling Real World series of books about Adobe Photoshop and the definitive works Real World Color Management and Real World Camera Raw, Bruce has enlightened end users and experts worldwide on the intricacies of color publishing and imaging.
Macworld Conference and Expo 2007 along with major manufacturers, Peachpit Press (Bruce’s publisher), and an array of imaging luminaries and digital photography superstars, is pleased to invite all conference attendees and exhibitors to a gala tribute for legendary consultant, author and lecturer Bruce Fraser.
Hosted by internationally renowned musician and photographer Graham Nash, this program promises to be the must-attend event of the conference.
Attendance is free for conference attendees and Macworld has arranged for anybody to register (for free) to attend this event.

Bruce Fraser, noted author and lecturer, passed away on Saturday, December 16th, 2006. He was at home with his wife Angela and friends. Bruce, a Buddhist, will be cremated and his ashes returned to Scotland. Friends and family are working on an industry tribute to Bruce to be held at Macworld on the evening of January 10th, 2007.
When the mind is at peace,
the world too is at peace.
Nothing real, nothing absent.
Not holding on to reality,
not getting stuck in the void,
you are neither holy or wise, just
an ordinary fellow who has completed his work.
– Layman Pang-yun

Some of our visitors to PhotoshopNews may already be aware that Bruce Fraser, noted author, lecturer and “color geek”, was diagnosed several months ago with terminal lung cancer.

I’ll be taking some personal time off this week for family reasons, so PhotoshopNews will have only spotty coverage. However, you -WILL- want to tune into PhotoshopNews this coming Friday, December 15th-I can say no more…

For the last few years, a small exclusive group of people have been invited by the Pixel Mafia to attend a special dinner during PhotoPlus Expo (see the PSN Pixel Mafia story from 2005). Who is the Pixel Mafia you may ask? Well, if you have to ask, you really don’t want to know…The Rules of Omertá, ya know?
This year, the Pixel Mafia Dinner was held on Thursday, November 2nd at Jovia Restaurant (135 E 62nd Street near Lexington). The guests were comprised of the “Usual Suspects” as well as some new blood.

Severel members of PixelGenius will be speaking at PhotoPlus Expo in New York City starting Thursday, November 2nd, 2006. PG Members include Martin Evening, Seth Resnick, Andrew Rodney and Jeff Schewe. See the whole story for schedule of when and where.

I’ll be on the road to California, the Bay Area to visit Adobe in San Jose, go to the Wine Spectator Wine Experience and do Greg Gorman’s Digital Photographic Workshop in Mendocino…oh yeah, then I’ll be in Phoenix (well, ok actually Chandler) AZ for the Epson Print Academy. Busy couple of weeks! And, if that’s not enough I’ll also be joining Martin Evening, Seth Resnick and Andrew Rodney (and a few thousand other photographers) for PhotoPlus Expo in New York City.
Needless to say, the amount of posts on PhotoshopNews might be a little light.

According to Uncyclopedia, Photoshop is a verb to describe the action of modifying an image with computer software, usually MS Paint.
Photoshop can be used to make very convincing modifications to photographs. In this example, several team members have been removed. See if you can guess which ones!

I’m back from my trip to Santa Fe and I’ll be reporting of the class and the bike trip later, but in the meantime, it seems a bunch of stuff happened while I was gone. Here’s a roundup of some of the more important happenings…
Sep 14, 2006
Well, it’s that time of year again to pack up the bike and hit the road to Santa Fe for my annual workshop. Last year was a lot of fun and I’m really looking forward to getting out of town and on the road again this year. You can read about my class in this article Jeff Schewe’s Santa Fe Workshop.

Martin is due in this afternoon and the rest of the boys on Friday (except for Bruce cause he can’t fly at the moment so we’re going to iChat with him) for our annual PG Meeting. We have a lot to cover about some “interesting developments” (TOP SECRET-We Can Tell No One!). So, until next week, PSN will be on standby.
We will post a resolution regarding the Mac Photoshop 9.0.2 issues on 10.3.9 as soon as we’ve heard from our Adobe sources. The original Mac Updater has been withdrawn and will be replaced (it’s not yet known if it will be another 9.0.2 or a rev to 9.0.3). those people who have installed it on 10.3.9 should downgrade to 9.0.1. People running the 9.0.2 update on 10.4.x don’t need to worry.
I’m not sure if we’re going to have quite the photographic coverage this year, but if you want to see what goes on behind closed doors, check out last year’s meeting report. I do know for a fact we’ll be making at least one Sam’s run.
So, tune in again next week!

Over the weekend of August 5-6, 2006, PhotoshopNews successfully updated software. The downtime was about 15 minutes at about 3:00PM Central time on Sunday, August 6th. Registration and comments have been turned back on.
Many thanks to our engineer, Sam Swett for making the transition so smooth.

Well, contrary to some assertions on the net, I’ve not gone over to the “dark side” after attending the Microsoft Pro Photo Summit, but I have been busy. Can’t tell you about what yet…but I might venture that if you are a Windows user, you might want to stop back to PhotoshopNews a bit later in the day, oh, say 9:00PM Pacific time.
Why? Can’t tell ya. What’s it about? Can’t tell ya.
But if all goes right, stop back for the story…
P.S. And yes, I’m behind on my Photo Summit report (I shot a ton of shots) and the Photoshop Soup2Nuts Conference (I shot a ton of shots) and the Montréal and Toronto Print Academy reports (I shot a ton of shots) as well as my visit to Michael Reichmann’s country “cottage” (I shot a ton of shots there too). I’ll catch up sooner or later…

Dance Tom, dance!
Thomas Knoll the original co-author of Photoshop and primary engineer on Camera Raw and DNG has discovered a new engineer’s dance in a small Masai village deep in Tanzania: The Binary Dance. It’s so easy, even an engineer can do it…
up, down, up, down – repeat.

Ok, I’ll admit that I wasn’t paying real close attention-April 1st, 2006 came and went before I realized that it marked a milestone of sorts for PhotoshopNews.com. Our one year birthday.
