Press Release: Portland, OR – onOne Software, Inc., announced that its new software plug-in for Adobe Photoshop and Photoshop Elements – FocalPoint 1.0 – is now available for immediate download. onOne Software’s FocalPoint is a selective focus and vignetting plug-in designed to help photographers easily blur and/or vignette areas of an image.

Popular among professional wedding, portrait and commercial photographers, the soft defocused look typically produced in camera by using special selective focus or tilt-shift lenses, filters or vignetting hoods can now be created quickly within Photoshop using onOne Software’s new FocalPoint. This new plug-in provides both professional and advanced amateur photographers with additional creative options when editing their images in Photoshop.

“The new onOne Software FocalPoint plug-in, which is now available for download, gives photographers total control over how they apply creative focusing effects to their image after the image has been shot,” said Craig Keudell, president of onOne Software. “It’s just like having a lens inside of Photoshop. Users set the location of their ‘sweet spot’ of focus directly on their image and then control the amount, kind of blur used and even lighten or darken the edges quickly and easily.”

FocalPoint provides photographers with a way to create realistic depth of field control, plane of focus control and selective focus to any image after it is photographed allowing for more control and precision. The plug-in’s unique FocusBug control has a tangible, hardware feel much like adjusting a lens. This special on-screen control makes it fast for a photographer to choose the “sweet spot” of focus either in a round aperture shape or a planar aperture shape and then control how much and what kind of blur they would like to add. Blur choices include a standard defocused look as well as a blur that simulates motion. This has a huge benefit over hardware tools like auxiliary lenses and filters because it allows the photographer to control the focus and blur after the image is taken, giving them more control and requiring fewer shots in camera.

FocalPoint uses the same FocusBug controls to allow the photographer to simultaneously selectively blur as well as lighten or darken the areas outside of the “sweet spot” of focus. FocalPoint can also be used just for vignetting without blurring the image at all. In addition, the FocusBug allows users to tilt the chosen “sweet spot” aperture in 3D, simulating the tilt effect of a view camera or tilt-shift lens. This allows users to increase or decrease the amount of feathering or blur across a plane.

And once a photographer has created an effect they like, they can save it as a preset so they can easily recall it. FocalPoint remembers all of the settings applied including the relative size and position of the FocusBug so users can apply it to similar images without having to make any additional adjustments. By using Photoshop actions to access a FocalPoint preset photographers can even batch process an entire folder of images.

FocalPoint is designed for use with Adobe Photoshop and Photoshop Elements and supports Adobe Photoshop CS2 and CS3 and Elements versions 4.0.1, 5, 6 and higher. It is compatible with Microsoft Windows XP and Vista and Mac OS X 10.4.10 and 10.5 and higher. onOne Software’s FocalPoint plug-in is available now for $159.95 from onOne Software authorized distributors and resellers, or direct from onOne Software at

AKVIS Chameleon Plug-in v.5.0 Mon, 15 Oct 2007 17:04:59 +0000 PSN Editorial Staff Press Release: AKVIS LLC releases version 5.0 of its photo collage plug-in AKVIS Chameleon. The new version is a true breakthrough in photo collage creation. The program offers a new mode that allows transferring a roughly selected object to a new background with a clean result. No precise mask tools are needed! Now the program has an interface and all in all three modes with different collage possibilities. The Macintosh version is now Universal Binary.

Creating photo collages with AKVIS Chameleon is fun! This ingenious software makes the process easy and entertaining. Earlier one had to thoroughly select an object for pasting into a new background; with this software this tedious part of work drops out. You can concentrate on the creative part and forget about complicated selection techniques.

Version 5.0 of Chameleon has an interface with three modes that offer three photo collage types. The new “Montage” mode allows copying an object, for example, a group of people, a monument, a flower, etc into a new background. The trick is that the selection does not need to be precise. You can take a rectangular part of the source image and then use two pencils – red and blue – to roughly indicate the parts that should appear on the resulting photo collage – for instance, a figure of a person, and the parts that should blend away – the rest of the background and irrelevant objects. Here is an example:

The other two modes were available in the earlier version of Chameleon and it is thanks to them that the program received its name. In “Chameleon” mode the plug-in pastes a copied object into a picture in such a way that the object adapts to the new color range and blends with the background, the way chameleons do. In this way you can add clouds to a clear sunset landscape and the clouds will adopt a red tint. Or you can paste a new nose into a face and the nose will acquire the complexion of the “receiving” face.

The tool does not require precise selection of the copied object and can be helpful to home users who are not experienced in image editing. You can create customized postcards for your loved ones; make a wedding album using all kinds of photos and backgrounds; correct closed eyes (by implanting open eyes from another photo of the series), change the appearance of a person, etc. Check the Tutorial page at to get a dozen of original ideas.

Designers will appreciate this tool as it allows them to combine images with entirely different color ranges or to create the effect of drawing on a texture surface (crumpled paper, wood, etc), and all that with only a mouse-click.

AKVIS Chameleon is compatible with Adobe Photoshop and Photoshop Elements, Corel (Jasc) Paint Shop Pro, Ulead PhotoImpact, Corel Photo-Paint and other popular software. AKVIS Chameleon V. 5.0 for Windows runs on Microsoft Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista and the Macintosh version runs on the Mac OS X platform.

For a free trial, AKVIS offers 10 days of fully functional use. The users who tried the previous version of Chameleon and have their version expired, now have the opportunity to test the software again.

AKVIS Chameleon sells for $75 USD, downloadable from . Home users can enjoy the full line of AKVIS plugins in the AKVIS Alchemy bundle (Enhancer, Chameleon, Stamp, Retoucher, Coloriage, Noise Buster, Decorator, Sketch, LightShop and Frame Suite) for USD $325 USD, a savings of $393 over purchasing each separately. For business licenses consult the official web-site. One license key allows activating the software on two computers, for example, on a desktop and a laptop.

The registered users can upgrade to version 5.0 by paying a charge of $15 US dollars for Home license ( $60 US dollars for Business license).

“Customers are always looking for new creative opportunities,” said Jim Tierney, president of Digital Anarchy. “Knoll Light Factory offers a great way of painting with light, when you need to add some flare and sparkle to an image. Improving and speeding up the workflow was a major emphasis for this release, as photographers don’t want to spend lots of time at the computer.”

Inside Light Factory, a user can choose from 19 different flare elements, then layer those elements to create the desired light effect. Almost any real life camera lens can be matched, or the Photoshop filter can generate completely original settings, and save out a preset for later use. Powerful functions include the ability to obscure the light with a grayscale mask; a real-time interactive preview; and 16-bit support for smoother glows and gradients.

Version 3.0 introduces a complete redesign of the user interface, with a simplified layout, new functions, a quick Preview Window, and preview thumbnails for light presets. The Light Editor has been integrated into a single interface that can be moved and resized to the user’s workspace. An additional 50 light presets give users additional pre-made effects that range from naturalistic to dramatic.

Some of the exciting features in Knoll Spark Pack 3.0 include:

  • New User Interface: The UI has been redesigned for ease of use, including previews of light presets and access to editing functions in one window.
  • Real-Time Preview: The main Preview Window now supports real-time manipulation, as well as the ability to resize and zoom in/out.
  • 100+ Light Presets: There are now well over 100 great places to start when looking for that special flare.
  • 16-bit Color Support: Light effects now render out to higher bit depths, which reduces banding and outputs better looking glows and gradients.
  • Mac Intel and 64-bit Windows compatible: Full support of all of the new operating systems and religious preferences.
  • Obscuration Layer: Use a grayscale mask to partially obscure the lights, and make more realistic effects when lights are being partially blocked by an object.
  • Tint Layer: Use a separate layer to change the flare color for easier compositing on complex images.
  • Randomize Feature: A Randomize button and slider let users organically discover fun new effects.
  • Undo Functionality: Multi-level undo allows for an improved workflow when designing lights.

Alien Skin Software Releases Exposure 2 Film Stock Simulator and Effects Package Mon, 01 Oct 2007 15:53:39 +0000 PSN Editorial Staff alien_skin_exposure2.jpgLatest Version of Industry-Leading Photoshop Plug-in Features More Than 300 Presets for Film Simulation and a Full Range of Photo Lab and Darkroom Effects

Press Release: RALEIGH, N.C. (Business Wire EON) October 1, 2007 — Alien Skin® Software (, the award-winning developer of photographic filter and effect plug-ins for Adobe® Photoshop® and other compatible host programs, today announced the release of Exposure® 2, the latest version of its industry-leading film stock simulator and effects package.

Exposure 2 lets digital photographers and graphic artists enhance any digital photo by simulating the rich, organic look of film.

Developed from a detailed, scientific analysis of current and discontinued color and black and white print and slide stocks, Exposure 2 features more than 300 presets that emulate the warmth, softness, and realistic grains of film the vivid colors of Velvia®, the natural skin tones of Portra®, and the ethereal glow of infrared to provide new and alternative looks for fashion, wedding, magazine, event, and portrait photographers, photo hobbyists, and a wide array of creative, printing, and graphic arts professionals. Exposure 2 even simulates the retro colors of faded Polaroid®.

More sophisticated than merely adding simple digital noise, Exposure 2s grain simulation models the size, shape, and color of real world grain, including the unique salt and pepper grain of TRI-X® and the large, intensely colorful grain of the discontinued GAF® 500. Exposure 2 grain size is automatically adjusted to image size so grain looks the same on high- and low-resolution photos. A roughness control gives Exposure 2 users subtle control over grain shape.

While other digital image products produce flat, lifeless black and white conversions, Exposure 2 also brings back the high impact of black and white film to digital photography. A simple yet flexible channel mixer interface provides subtle control over the color to black and white conversion process. Color toning, contrast, and grain add the finishing touches to turn color photographs into dramatic black and white works of art.

Beyond the ability to reproduce the look and feel of film, Exposure 2 offers a range of effects previously available only in darkrooms and photo labs, such as push and cross processing and glamour portrait softening. Exposure 2s controls enable users to easily manage color saturation, tone, sharpness, and grain, streamlining workflow for photographers and graphic artists with one comprehensive yet easy-to-use tool.

Applying Exposure 2 settings to batches of images is easily accomplished using Photoshop Actions. Any Exposure 2 preset can be the starting point for a signature look by adjusting it to suit a particular subject. This new look can be saved as a setting for future use. All Exposure 2 settings can be deployed nondestructively in a new Photoshop layer named after the setting used. Exposure 2 supports Photoshop CS3 Smart Filters.

For ease of use, Exposure 2 settings are organized into categories, and last-used settings are remembered and highlighted. Previews are automatically scaled to fit the current window size. Multithreaded to run faster on multiprocessors or multi-core processors, Exposure 2 also easily handles 16-bit images, allowing RAW images to be manipulated at their highest quality.

Grubba Software announces TrueGrain Wed, 19 Sep 2007 16:17:51 +0000 PSN Editorial Staff Press Release: Cary, North Carolina-September 18, 2007-Grubba Software today introduced TrueGrain, a professional creative tool for accurately recapturing the aesthetics of black & white film with digital photography.

The TrueGrain software contains a library of grain samples and profiles for a number of classic film stocks, some of which are no longer available and are unlikely to be available in the future. TrueGrain users can easily import high resolution digital imagery-such as that produced with today’s professional DSLR cameras-and immediately see a close approximation of how the image would look if it had been exposed using any of the film stocks in TrueGrain’s library, right down to the fine grain structure details only visible under magnification.

“People have been fooling around with techniques for recapturing the look of film for a while now, but most of these attempts have been tentative and generic in both thrust and result,” said Martin Doudoroff, Grubba Software collaborator. “We think TrueGrain goes quite a bit further through its empirical approach: high resolution film grain samples and meticulous databases of measurements. Our approach is brute force, but it produces the kind of results professionals are looking for. And our software makes it all quite accessible.”

The inspiration for TrueGrain was the alarmingly swift decline of the traditional film photography industry and the equally swift maturation of the digital photography industry.

“Recently, we realized we weren’t going to be able to get the films we were accustomed to. The majority of black and white films are out of production and entire manufacturers have gotten out of the film business,” said Gus Grubba, the principle software engineer for Grubba Software. “We decided the only way we could continue to achieve the look we got from film was by processing digital images. We went on a film hunt on eBay and bought just about everything we could find. Between that and the films we already had stockpiled, we had a good basis for TrueGrain.”

The primary application for TrueGrain is as a creative tool. In addition, TrueGrain has the potential to improve large prints of up-scaled digital images, and may prove useful for matching existing film images in restoration and compositing situations.

Pricing and availability: TrueGrain is now available for US$300 through the TrueGrain web site at A downloadable demo edition is also available. TrueGrain requires Mac OS X version 10.4.9 or later, a Macintosh computer, and at least 2GB RAM.

Grubba Software is an independent software developer based in Cary, North Carolina. Principal software developer Gus Grubba is a veteran of the computer graphics industry and an accomplished fine art photographer. Collaborator Martin Doudoroff is an escapee from the computer graphics industry, an amateur photographer, and an acknowledged cocktail expert. Released in September 2007, TrueGrain is Grubba Software’s first product.

PixelGenius Releases RCs for Photoshop CS3 Fri, 01 Jun 2007 05:56:25 +0000 PSN Editorial Staff

PixelGenius, the developers of PhotoKit™, PhotoKit Sharpener™ and PhotoKit Color 2™ have released what they have determined are Release Candidate (RC) versions of their products for Mac and Windows users of Photoshop CS3 or Photoshop CS3 Extended. These RCs are “real close” but still have a couple of issues and need testing “in the wild”.

PG has also announced that due to popular demand, these new RCs will be able to use cross-platform licensing. So, if you are in a mixed-platform environment, you can use your Mac serial number on Windows or your Windows serial number on Mac.

PG stated, on their web site, that in order to accomplish this, they have incorporated the new serial number scheme along with product activation. The standard 2 activations are allowed by the End User License Agreement (EULA). Current users with valid and registered installs will not need to re-enter their serial numbers but will need to activate this new version. More info about activation is available on the download page.

Release Candidate Notes: The RCs of PixelGenius products are not yet officially supported by PixelGenius. All three products have been tested and are compatible with Photoshop CS3 and CS3 Extended, however, there are some known issues;

  • The current Read Me files have not yet been updated with product activation information.
  • Some of our plug-in modules when run under Photoshop CS3 can not be started when an adjustment layer is the currently targeted layer-the work around is to select a pixel based layer. PixelGenius believes this is a bug with Photoshop CS3 and not our products and we’ve contacted Adobe about this issue.
  • Photoshop CS2 under Vista is not officially supported by Adobe, so our products can not be officially supported either. The work around is to make sure the Photoshop CS2 application is run under Admin Permissions.
  • Adobe does not recommend running any earlier version of Photoshop than Photoshop CS2 under Vista and PixelGenius will not support any of our products running under any other version of Photoshop besides Photoshop CS3 or Photoshop CS3 Extended.

The Mac and Windows RCs are available at the download page here.

Users of the previous beta versions of the plug-in should update to these new versions as the betas are due to expire today, June 1st, 2007.

Photoshop Plug-In for Google 3D Warehouse Now Available Thu, 31 May 2007 19:43:12 +0000 PSN Editorial Staff Software Add-On Delivers Direct Access to Google’s Free 3D Content

Press Release: SAN JOSE, Calif. — May 31, 2007 — Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) and Google Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG) today announced the Photoshop® CS3 Extended plug-in for the Google 3D Warehouse, enabling Adobe® Photoshop CS3 Extended users to take further advantage of the software’s powerful compositing, painting and image-editing toolset for editing 3D content. With the plug-in, users will be able to query and download free 3D content from the Google 3D Warehouse, Google’s free online repository for 3D models and content, directly within Photoshop CS3 Extended. 3D Content then can be placed, manipulated and used in composites with the new 3D tools in Photoshop CS3 Extended.

The plug-in is available for free download from the Adobe Labs Web site at .

“We were happy to collaborate with Adobe on the Photoshop Extended plug-in for the Google 3D Warehouse. With this plug-in, users of Photoshop CS3 Extended can participate in the 3D Warehouse community, giving them the ability to search, store and share thousands of 3D models and content,” said Mark Limber, product manager at Google. “The Google 3D Warehouse repository, combined with Photoshop CS3 Extended, allows creatives, architects, manufacturers and others to find exactly what they need to bring their virtual worlds and conceptual designs to life.”

The Google 3D Warehouse is a free Google service which allows anyone to search for and download 3D models and content via a standard Web browser and now, with this plug-in, Photoshop CS3 Extended. Users can also submit their own models to share within the community by uploading them from Google SketchUp into the 3D Warehouse. Models include everything needed for a 3D world, including: buildings, houses, bridges, statues, sculptures, couches, cars, people, pets and more. If the model has a location on earth, such as a building in New York city, you can also download and view it in Google Earth.

Once downloaded, the plug-in opens a dialog box that connects directly to Google’s 3D Warehouse via the Internet. Users can browse and search the 3D Warehouse for content, and download and save selections to their hard drive. Downloaded models will be saved in the COLLADA format. With support for industry standard 3D formats, including COLLADA, Photoshop CS3 Extended opens 3D models as 3D layers. Users can then access the textures applied to model surfaces, enhance them with Photoshop CS3 Extended and its wide range of editing and painting tools, and save or composite them into a 2-D image.

“Our work with Google brings 3D content directly into the Photoshop CS3 Extended experience, enabling more efficient editing and enriching the overall visualization process,” said Kevin Connor, senior director of product management for Digital Imaging Professional Products at Adobe. “Photoshop CS3 Extended was developed to help professionals push the limits of digital imaging and more easily realize their vision in 3D. It’s great to see Google’s early support for Photoshop CS3 Extended and the advancement of 3D design workflows.”
