Mac OS X
Liquid Resize is a self-contained, stand-alone application bundle. To install it follow these directions.

1. Download the Liquid_Resize.dmg file from the onOne website.
2. It will automatically mount to the desktop when the download is complete.
3. Drag the Liquid Resize application to your Applications folder.

Windows
The Windows version of Liquid Resize uses an installer that will place the application and support files in the proper locations. You must have administrator rights to install Liquid Resize. To install follow these directions.

1. Download the Liquid_Resize.zip file from the onOne Website.
2. Decompress the .zip file
3. In the Liquid Resize folder that is decompressed, double-click on setup.exe
4. Follow the onscreen instructions.

More to Come
Please note, Liquid Resize is still early in development and this is only a Product Preview. It is not the final, shipping version and as such is not complete. There are several known issues so please be sure to read the Read Me file included with this preview release as well as the onOne Software Forums where you can get updated information.

Among the things planned to add include a much faster implementation of the algorithm and a new user interface that matches the other onOne plug-ins for Photoshop like Genuine Fractals, FocalPoint and PhotoTools.

Availability and Pricing
This free product preview of Liquid Resize for both Windows and Mac OS X users is available now as a stand-alone application from the onOne Software Web site. A robust, full-featured Photoshop plug-in version of Liquid Resize is expected to be available in the middle of 2008. Pricing has not yet been announced for the final version of Liquid Resize that will be released later this year.

Apple Release Aperture 2 http://photoshopnews.com/2008/02/12/apple-release-aperture-2/ http://photoshopnews.com/2008/02/12/apple-release-aperture-2/#comments Tue, 12 Feb 2008 23:41:22 +0000 PSN Editorial Staff http://photoshopnews.com/2008/02/12/apple-release-aperture-2/ aperture_125_080205.jpgMajor Upgrade Features Improved Interface, Faster Browsing & Enhanced Image Processing

Press Release: CUPERTINO, California—February 12, 2008—Apple® today introduced Aperture™ 2, the next major release of its groundbreaking photo editing and management software with over 100 new features that make it faster, easier to use and more powerful. With a streamlined user interface and entirely new image processing engine, Aperture 2 also introduces new imaging tools for highlight recovery, color vibrancy, local contrast definition, soft-edged retouching, vignetting and RAW fine-tuning, and lets users directly post their portfolios on the .Mac Web Gallery* for viewing on the web, iPhone™, iPod® touch and Apple TV®. At a new low price of $199, anyone can easily organize, edit and publish photos like a pro.

“Many of the most respected photographers on assignment all over the world trust Aperture to organize, edit and deliver their images,” said Rob Schoeben, Apple’s vice president of Applications Product Marketing. “With its simpler interface and lower price, anyone can take full advantage of Aperture’s power.”

“At the end of the day, it’s all about the quality of the image,” said Sports Illustrated contributing photographer David Bergman. “Even before I begin making adjustments, Aperture’s new RAW processing gives me better images with more visible detail and better color rendering than any other program I’ve tested.”

“I used to have so much stress about post-production on a shoot, having to juggle multiple applications to make sure they all worked,” said Bob Davis, PDN Top Knots Wedding Photographer 2007. “With Aperture that’s no longer a factor. I can do everything all in one application.”

Featuring a new, easier user interface designed to be more intuitive and accessible, Aperture 2 now lets users navigate between Viewer and Browser modes with a single key command. Screen real estate is maximized for images with an all-in-one heads up display that allows users to toggle between library, metadata and adjustment controls in a single tabbed inspector. The All Projects view, modeled after iPhoto’s Events view, provides a poster photo for every project and the ability to quickly skim through the photos inside, and the integrated iPhoto® Browser offers direct access to all the events and images in the iPhoto library.

Performance has been enhanced in Aperture 2 so it’s faster to import, browse and search large volumes of images. Embedded previews let photographers caption, keyword and rate images as they are being imported, and with the ability to export images in the background, photographers can continue working while images are processed to JPEG, TIFF, PNG and PSD file formats. Quick Preview allows users to browse RAW images in rapid succession without having to wait for files to load, and the Aperture library database has been re-architected to provide fast project switching and near instantaneous search results, even when working with extremely large libraries of 500,000 images or more.

Aperture 2 delivers powerful new imaging tools for getting the most out of each photograph. Apple’s next-generation RAW image processing is at the core of Aperture 2 offering uncompromising image quality and precision controls that let users fine-tune the image profile for each of their cameras. New tools for improving and enhancing images include Recovery for pulling back “blown” highlights, Vibrancy for selectively boosting saturation without adversely affecting skin tones, Definition, which offers local contrast for adding clarity to images, Vignette & Devignette filters for providing professional visual effects and a true soft-edged Repair and Retouch brush for quickly and easily removing blemishes, cleaning up sensor dust and cloning away problem areas.

Aperture 2 works seamlessly with Mac OS® X, iLife®, iWork™, .Mac and Apple print products, so any image in the Aperture library can be accessed directly from within other applications, such as iMovie®, Keynote® and Pages®, and even from within Leopard™ Mail. Now with .Mac Web Gallery support, Aperture users can publish their photos once to view them on the web, iPhone, iPod touch and Apple TV. Books in Aperture 2 feature new theme designs, layout tools, customized dust jackets (including full-bleed) and foil stamped covers.

Pricing & Availability
Aperture 2 is available immediately for a suggested retail price of $199 (US) through the Apple Store® (www.apple.com), Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers. Owners of previous versions of Aperture can upgrade to Aperture 2 for just $99 (US). Full system requirements and more information on Aperture 2 can be found at www.apple.com/aperture.

Press Release: COPENHAGEN, Denmark–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Phase One today announced the availability of Capture One 4, the next generation of the world’s first RAW workflow software. Built on a new architecture, the successor to Phase One’s entry-level Capture One LE offers photographers – pros and enthusiasts alike – a RAW workflow solution for superior image quality.

A newly designed user interface offers high fidelity color and detail reproduction, plus new timesaving workflow features. Capture One 4 supports medium-format digital backs and a wide range of DSLR cameras.

“Our recent survey of professional photographers shows that pros have fully adopted digital and RAW format, with 89 percent of total images now being captured digitally and over 50 percent of them in RAW format,” said Ed Lee, Director at InfoTrends.

“Capture One excels at RAW workflow,” said Jan H. Christiansen, marketing director for Phase One. “Today, it is no less an art to develop digital images than to process film in the darkroom. Ours is not an ‘end-to-end’ solution, but devoted to helping photographers achieve the highest quality from the images they have captured.”

About Capture One 4

Capture One 4 marries sophistication with a simple, intuitive ease. It invokes more consistent use of shortcuts, tools and naming. It is compatible with many other popular applications; for example, users can have a seamless workflow with Capture One to process RAW files and Adobe Photoshop to post process images.

  • New user interface offers maximum space for the images. Images, not sliders and controls, are the focus. A darker background permits easier image viewing and enhancements. As with previous generations of Capture One, a guided workflow is available to assist the photographer in the image enhancement process;
  • View and work with up to 12 images simultaneously at full resolution;
  • Multiple Variants of a single RAW image can be made with virtually no disk and performance overhead;
  • Manage and transfer license codes, so Capture One 4 can be used on one computer one day and on another computer the next.
  • Recover details in highlights and shadows with high dynamic range control;
  • Import and export images in DNG format, for more options to share and archive;
  • Powerful new shortcut architecture allows faster image import, adjustment and processing

Pricing and availability

Existing Capture One customers can upgrade to Capture One 4 at no extra cost. Designed for Windows XP (SP2)/Vista and Mac OS X 10.4.11 and 10.5, Capture One 4 is available now via download at http://www.phaseone.com/4 for 129 USD and 99 EUR through Phase One’s e-Shop.

Press Release: Paris, France – October 1st, 2007 – DxO Labs today announced DxO Optics Pro v5, the latest version of its award-winning flagship software application for automatic image quality enhancement for Digital SLR camera users. Due to be released later in the fall, DxO Optics Pro v5 sets a new standard for image quality with its new RAW conversion engine. All purchasers of DxO Optics Pro v4.5 on or after August 1st, 2007 are eligible for a free upgrade to DxO Optics Pro v5.

A breakthrough in demosaicing; the ‘holy grail’ of RAW conversion
DxO Optics Pro v5’s RAW conversion engine includes a completely new demosaicing algorithm which produces images with much more detail and fewer artifacts, setting a new standard in image quality. Demosaicing is the crucial step of RAW conversion durin which the camera’s image sensor pattern is reconstructed as a visible image for the human eye. Inherently, demosaicing involves trade-offs between image sharpness, details, noise, processing time and conversion artifacts. The quality of demosaicing determines the amount of detail and artifacts in the final image. These artifacts, particularly visible and unsightly, are compounded at high ISO settings and are in large part responsible for what is deemed the unnatural look of digital images.

“DxO Labs’ approach to demosaicing turned a number of classical solutions on their head: instead of only considering pixels with respect to their direct neighbors, DxO’s new RAW Engine uses a ‘non local’ approach looking much further than is usual from each pixel in the image in order to reconstruct detail. This significantly reduces demosaicing artifacts,” said Frédéric Guichard, Chief Scientist at DxO Labs.

Performing noise removal directly on the RAW data for best lowlight performance
The other key characteristic of DxO Optics Pro’s new RAW Engine is that instead of applying noise reduction techniques after demosaicing, a newly-developed noise reduction is performed upfront, before noise has a chance to be amplified by the RAW conversion process and absorb important fine details.

Combined with other proprietary techniques, DxO Optics Pro v5’s new RAW Engine produces both the most detailed and most natural looking images yet – its very fine and homogenous grain translating into subtle shades and textures. DxO Optics Pro v5’s new RAW conversion engine has been fine-tuned and optimized with the rest of the software’s automated image enhancement features (optical corrections, color rendering, exposure optimization, highlight recovery, etc.) to prodce best-in class results.

Dust/Blemish Removal now available in version 5
DxO Optics Pro v5 now incorporates a new tool to remove dust and blemishes from any digital image. Once dust and blemishes have been marked by the user, DxO Optics Pro v5 can automatically process any number of images with this particular dust/blemish template.

A revamped User Interface
Based on extensive research and communications with photographers, DxO Optics Pro’s user interface has been reorganized to improve workflow and ease of use. In particular, tools are now organized into four main sections that match the photographer’s approach: Light, Color, Geometry, Details. Users of DxO Optics Pro v5 can also customize their workspace to their particular way of working or choose to keep the tool organization of the previous version. DxO Optics Pro’s powerfu project and preset functions have also been overhauled for increased ease of use and functionality.

Increased speed and camera support
Benefiting from an entire rewrite using Microsoft’s .NET and Apple’s ObjC-Cocoa technologies, DxO Optics Pro v5 is up to four times faster than version 4.0. This is due in particular to the use of GPU processing – where the power of dedicated video card chips is used to accelerate an application.

DxO Optics Pro v5 will also support the latest Canon and Nikon Digital SLR camera bodies. Support for the Canon 40D, Canon 1Ds MKIII, Nikon D300 and Nikon D3 will be included in DxO Optics Pro v5 over the next few months following the availability of these cameras.

Pricing and availability
DxO Optics Pro v5 for Windows is planned to be available a the end of October 2007. DxO Optics Pro v5 for Macintosh is planned to be available approximately one month after the Windows version.

DxO Optics Pro v5 will be available in Standard and Elite versions at pricing unchanged from version 4.5:

DxO Optics Pro v5 Standard: £99
DxO Optics Pro v5 Elite: £199
(Prices include 17.5% VAT)

LaserSoft Releases SilverFast 6.5 http://photoshopnews.com/2006/12/08/lasersoft-releases-silverfast-65/ http://photoshopnews.com/2006/12/08/lasersoft-releases-silverfast-65/#comments Fri, 08 Dec 2006 16:51:20 +0000 PSN Editorial Staff http://photoshopnews.com/2006/12/08/lasersoft-releases-silverfast-65/ Press Release: LaserSoft Imaging has released SilverFast 6.5. Apart from many improvements and enhancements, the new version implements “outstanding new features to support your creativity and productivity when using SilverFast software,” according to the company.

Enhancing the Dynamic Range of Scanners
SilverFast’s Multi-Exposure generates 8-bit Raw scans that are then calculated using variable exposures. The function is similar to exposure rows, as they are known from the photography profession. With this feature, the supported scanner’s dynamic range is significantly increased while the noise of the CCDs is effectively minimized. Hence, more details will become visible in the shadow areas of an image.

This provides one main advantage over Multi-Sampling. Multi-Exposure reaches the same quality much faster. The slower 8x or 16x multisampling processes become obsolete, since higher quality can be achieved using the Multi-Exposure feature.

NegaFix Improvement + New NegaFix Profiles
NegaFix mode now provides a much more neutral color environment thanks to a new extended function. This is especially important for profiles that are not 100 percent accurate. With this feature, the orange masks present in color negatives can easily be removed with the new conversion. CCR activation is done by a check box within the NegaFix-dialog.

Automatic Detection of Frames
Image frames can now be detected and cropped automatically in the preview window using this new feature. The images must have a certain distance between them and the outer edge to detect the frames. A high contrast background is helpful in reflective scans. For transparencies, using the supplied film and slide holders is useful, since they offer an optimal contrast to the background.

Basic-Mode as Starting Aid
All SilverFast versions from v6.5 and up may now be switched between Standard and Basic mode. Hence, SilverFast novices will find the software easier to use.

New Installers
The new Apple installer is now used for Macintosh computers. A double click on the installer icon launches the installation process. The entire installation is completely guided and follows the current Apple Macintosh standard.

SFAi — HDR Gamma Optimization
The gamma values selected SilverFastAi are now automatically detected and applied in SilverFastHDR. All SilverFastSE and SilverFastSEPlus versions of V.6.5 or newer will contain this new feature.

The price of SilverFast 6.5 varies depending on scanner, and accessories included. See the website for specific pricing. Current users can upgrade to SilverFast 6.5 for a nominal fee.

SilverFast 6.5 has been optimized for the following operating systems:
Mac OS-X 10.2 and higher, Windows 2000, XP.

Adobe Labs Introduces Kuler http://photoshopnews.com/2006/11/16/adobe-labs-introduces-kuler/ http://photoshopnews.com/2006/11/16/adobe-labs-introduces-kuler/#comments Thu, 16 Nov 2006 18:08:28 +0000 PSN Editorial Staff http://photoshopnews.com/2006/11/16/adobe-labs-introduces-kuler/ kuler.jpg

kuler is a new hosted application for creating, exploring and sharing color harmonies.

kuler-2.jpg

At the web site, users can use the hosted app to create color schemes and themes based on predefined color formulas, or by mixing their own color themes using an interactive color wheel. Color themes can be created in multiple colorspaces including RGB, CMYK and LAB. Themes can be tagged, shared and commented on. Users can search the kuler online community for top rated colors, or search for schemes by tag word or date created. Users of Adobe Creative Suite 2 applications can download any color theme as an Adobe Swatch Exchange (.ASE) file that can be imported in their preferred creative application and can be applied on their artwork.

kuler-3.jpg

Creating a color theme can be based upon “rules” or custom…

kuler4.jpg

…you can drag the color wheel to do color themes of your own making.

kuler5.jpg

The color swatches on the top were rotated to achieve a new theme on the bottom.

kuler6.jpg

Rules allow for quick formations of themes or you can check other popular or highly rated color themes.

kuler7.jpg

You can name and save themes and publish them for others to access.

kuler8.png

Each of the colors in a theme show readouts in various color values such as HSV, RGB, CMYK, LAB and HEX. The readouts of the color values can be copied to the clipboard. The themes can also be downloaded to use with Adobe Creative Suite applications.

Above, other users have created and shared themes you can browse though.

For the full kuler experience, sign in using your Adobe ID. You can then save, publish, download, rate and comment on themes. Be sure to check out the kuler talk forum.

Adrian Graham, Picasa product manager, announced the deal in an official Google blog posting today, saying that Neven Vision brings expertise on automatically obtaining information from a photo.

“It could be as simple as detecting whether or not a photo contains a person, or, one day, as complex as recognizing people, places, and objects. This technology just may make it a lot easier for you to organize and find the photos you care about,” Graham wrote.

Was It Done With a Lens, or a Brush? http://photoshopnews.com/2006/08/04/was-it-done-with-a-lens-or-a-brush/ http://photoshopnews.com/2006/08/04/was-it-done-with-a-lens-or-a-brush/#comments Fri, 04 Aug 2006 14:58:44 +0000 PSN Editorial Staff http://photoshopnews.com/?p=1309 Source: The New York Times
Written by Ian Austen

Like many amateur photographers, Joe Dejesus posts his photos online and compares them to the work of others on the photo-sharing site Flickr. At some point last year, a number of landscape photos caught his eye with their vibrant tones and colors.

Their secret was a software technology known as H.D.R., for high dynamic range photography. And Mr. Dejesus quickly became one of its practitioners.

“You can get different combinations of colors you cannot achieve with photos,” said Mr. Dejesus, who lives in Granada Hills, Calif., and posts his work under the pseudonym Kris Kros at www.flickr.com/photos/kros. “You can easily come up with something that looks like a painting.”

A photo of Hollywood Boulevard by Joe Dejesus shows what can be done with H.D.R. software.

H.D.R. is one of many digital darkroom techniques catching the fancy of amateur photographers. With the rising popularity of digital single-lens reflex cameras and more powerful personal computers has come a growing interest in visual experiments.

At the same time, software makers like Adobe are increasingly automating many of those processes, including H.D.R. While they may not always be straightforward, tricky digital techniques no longer require months of experience or hours of study.

Although H.D.R. photos are often compared to paintings, they are an attempt by software makers to allow photography to more accurately mimic human vision.

Dynamic range measures how great a difference between light and dark can be captured by a digital camera or film. Relative to the human eye, all photography has a limited dynamic range, and digital photography suffers even more than film.

It is this limitation that leads to landscape photos where a dramatic sky appears as a washed-out smudge. A classic example of the problem is trying to photograph a room’s interior while still capturing the view outside its windows. In that case, photographers are usually forced to choose either the room or its view as their subject.

While it is certainly possible to darken skies and lighten shadows using Photoshop and other image editing programs, even Adobe, the company that makes Photoshop, acknowledges that those methods fall short.

“You’re just not going to get access to the whole range of the scene,” said John Peterson, a senior computer scientist at Adobe who helped develop Photoshop.

The problem, quite simply, is that the data image editors need is not captured by cameras, even if the image was saved as a RAW file, which holds more data than a conventional JPEG photo.

DxO Optics Pro software improves the image quality of Digital Single-Lens Reflex (SLR) cameras and advanced digicams. DxO Optics Pro is the award-winning digital image enhancement tool incorporating revolutionary optics, noise and exposure corrections in an easy-to-use, feature rich application for Mac and PC users. “DxO Optics Pro v4 brings a wealth of true innovations including faster throughput and significantly improved control over color and optical performance,” said Luc Marin, vice president of the Photography Business Unit at DxO Labs. “In the eight months since releasing the previous (v3.5) DxO Optics Pro software, our engineers have worked diligently to add the kinds of improvements photographers world wide have been requesting.”

DxO Optics Pro v4, slated to be available on Macintosh and Windows platforms in September 2006, includes four main areas of exciting new functionality:

NEW: Unique DxO Color Engine with breakthrough features
Thanks to the new DxO Color Engine, DxO Optics Pro v4 provides photographers with a complete color adjustment toolbox including two revolutionary features:

This groundbreaking feature automatically brings three-dimensional objects that appear deformed by ultra-wide angle lenses back to their correct proportions. The effect of this unique correction is particularly dramatic for images including human beings. As with previous versions, DxO Optics Engine automatically corrects lens distortion, vignetting, lens softness and chromatic aberrations including purple fringing.

NEW: Improved Performance and Optimized Workflow – up to 500% faster
Remaining focused on providing automatic image enhancement, DxO Optics Pro v4 marks a radical overhaul of the application’s ergonomics as well as many important enhancements to the workflow. Both image adjustment and image processing speed have been key priorities in the development of DxO Optics Pro v4 resulting in speed increases of up to 500% compared to the previous version. DxO Optics Pro v4 will also be optimized for Mac/Intel processors.

NEW: Core DxO image enhancement features to be available as Adobe Photoshop Plug-In
Now, DxO Optics Pro features will always be available within the most popular photo-retouching application. – New Color Rendition feature offering multiple color renderings and modes for images. In particular, the Color Rendition profile of one camera can be applied to images taken with another camera.

Many other color features are included and in particular the ability to import third party ICC color rendition profiles.

NEW: Third generation DxO Optics Engine – comprehensive image geometry control
Now in its third release, DxO Optics Engine, a core component of DxO Optics Pro, expands functionality to include horizon adjustment (rotation), keystoning (perspective) correction as well as a new exclusive Volume Anamorphosis correction feature.

Once installed in Photoshop, the new DxO Optics Pro Plug-in will allow users to directly access core DxO image correction features when opening RAW or JPEG images.

Availability and upgrade policy
DxO Optics Pro v4 is planned to be available for Windows, Intel Mac and Macintosh in September 2006. All purchasers of DxO Optics Pro v3.55 after June 20, 2006 are eligible for a free upgrade. Pricing of upgrades and full versions of DxO Optics Pro v4 will be announced at a later date.

DxO Optics Pro has been chosen as 2006 “Best Photo Software” by the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA).
