Some of our visitors to PhotoshopNews may already be aware that Bruce Fraser, noted author, lecturer and “color geek”, was diagnosed several months ago with terminal lung cancer.

Taking some PTO

I’ll be taking some personal time off this week for family reasons, so PhotoshopNews will have only spotty coverage. However, you -WILL- want to tune into PhotoshopNews this coming Friday, December 15th-I can say no more…

The Pixel Mafia Dinner 2006

For the last few years, a small exclusive group of people have been invited by the Pixel Mafia to attend a special dinner during PhotoPlus Expo (see the PSN Pixel Mafia story from 2005). Who is the Pixel Mafia you may ask? Well, if you have to ask, you really don’t want to know…The Rules of Omertá, ya know?

This year, the Pixel Mafia Dinner was held on Thursday, November 2nd at Jovia Restaurant (135 E 62nd Street near Lexington). The guests were comprised of the “Usual Suspects” as well as some new blood.

On the Road to California (and Phoenix)

I’ll be on the road to California, the Bay Area to visit Adobe in San Jose, go to the Wine Spectator Wine Experience and do Greg Gorman’s Digital Photographic Workshop in Mendocino…oh yeah, then I’ll be in Phoenix (well, ok actually Chandler) AZ for the Epson Print Academy. Busy couple of weeks! And, if that’s not enough I’ll also be joining Martin Evening, Seth Resnick and Andrew Rodney (and a few thousand other photographers) for PhotoPlus Expo in New York City.

Needless to say, the amount of posts on PhotoshopNews might be a little light.

Photoshop at Uncyclopedia

According to Uncyclopedia, Photoshop is a verb to describe the action of modifying an image with computer software, usually MS Paint.

Photoshop can be used to make very convincing modifications to photographs. In this example, several team members have been removed. See if you can guess which ones!

I’m back

I’m back from my trip to Santa Fe and I’ll be reporting of the class and the bike trip later, but in the meantime, it seems a bunch of stuff happened while I was gone. Here’s a roundup of some of the more important happenings…

On the Road to Santa Fe

Well, it’s that time of year again to pack up the bike and hit the road to Santa Fe for my annual workshop. Last year was a lot of fun and I’m really looking forward to getting out of town and on the road again this year. You can read about my class in this article Jeff Schewe’s Santa Fe Workshop.

PSN On Hiatus for PixelGenius Meeting

pg-gang.jpg

Martin is due in this afternoon and the rest of the boys on Friday (except for Bruce cause he can’t fly at the moment so we’re going to iChat with him) for our annual PG Meeting. We have a lot to cover about some “interesting developments” (TOP SECRET-We Can Tell No One!). So, until next week, PSN will be on standby.

We will post a resolution regarding the Mac Photoshop 9.0.2 issues on 10.3.9 as soon as we’ve heard from our Adobe sources. The original Mac Updater has been withdrawn and will be replaced (it’s not yet known if it will be another 9.0.2 or a rev to 9.0.3). those people who have installed it on 10.3.9 should downgrade to 9.0.1. People running the 9.0.2 update on 10.4.x don’t need to worry.

I’m not sure if we’re going to have quite the photographic coverage this year, but if you want to see what goes on behind closed doors, check out last year’s meeting report. I do know for a fact we’ll be making at least one Sam’s run.

So, tune in again next week!

Many thanks to our engineer, Sam Swett for making the transition so smooth.

No news is good news?

Well, contrary to some assertions on the net, I’ve not gone over to the “dark side” after attending the Microsoft Pro Photo Summit, but I have been busy. Can’t tell you about what yet…but I might venture that if you are a Windows user, you might want to stop back to PhotoshopNews a bit later in the day, oh, say 9:00PM Pacific time.

Why? Can’t tell ya. What’s it about? Can’t tell ya.

But if all goes right, stop back for the story…

:~)

P.S. And yes, I’m behind on my Photo Summit report (I shot a ton of shots) and the Photoshop Soup2Nuts Conference (I shot a ton of shots) and the Montréal and Toronto Print Academy reports (I shot a ton of shots) as well as my visit to Michael Reichmann’s country “cottage” (I shot a ton of shots there too). I’ll catch up sooner or later…

See Tom Dance

Dance Tom, dance!
Thomas Knoll the original co-author of Photoshop and primary engineer on Camera Raw and DNG has discovered a new engineer’s dance in a small Masai village deep in Tanzania: The Binary Dance. It’s so easy, even an engineer can do it…
up, down, up, down – repeat.

Happy Birthday to us!

Ok, I’ll admit that I wasn’t paying real close attention-April 1st, 2006 came and went before I realized that it marked a milestone of sorts for PhotoshopNews.com. Our one year birthday.

Scott Byer on the Mac Intel Switch

From his Living Photoshop Adobe Blog, Photoshop engineer Scott Byer had this to say regarding the switch to Universal Binary using Xcode.

By now you have probably figured out that we aren’t releasing Universal Binaries of our current application versions. If you haven’t, all you need to know is pretty explicitly spelled out here.

“But, c’mon”, I hear people saying, “Steve said it was just a recompile!” Or, “Back during the PowerPC transition, you guys released a patch!”

Well, this time is different. And I really wish it weren’t. But let me tell you how…

PMA 2006-A View of the Photographic Industry From 30,000 Feet

Source: The Luminous Landscape
Written by Michael Reichmann

Trade shows are always a good opportunity to gauge the state of health of any industry. Walking the isles and talking with both exhibitors as well as attendees provides insights into what people are thinking as well as what they may appear to be doing.

With this as preamble, here are some highly subjective observations on the current (March, 2006) state of the photographic industry. No gospel here, just opinion.
