Press Release: SAN JOSE, Calif. — May 31, 2007 — Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) and Google Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG) today announced the Photoshop® CS3 Extended plug-in for the Google 3D Warehouse, enabling Adobe® Photoshop CS3 Extended users to take further advantage of the software’s powerful compositing, painting and image-editing toolset for editing 3D content. With the plug-in, users will be able to query and download free 3D content from the Google 3D Warehouse, Google’s free online repository for 3D models and content, directly within Photoshop CS3 Extended. 3D Content then can be placed, manipulated and used in composites with the new 3D tools in Photoshop CS3 Extended.

The plug-in is available for free download from the Adobe Labs Web site at http://labs.adobe.com .

“We were happy to collaborate with Adobe on the Photoshop Extended plug-in for the Google 3D Warehouse. With this plug-in, users of Photoshop CS3 Extended can participate in the 3D Warehouse community, giving them the ability to search, store and share thousands of 3D models and content,” said Mark Limber, product manager at Google. “The Google 3D Warehouse repository, combined with Photoshop CS3 Extended, allows creatives, architects, manufacturers and others to find exactly what they need to bring their virtual worlds and conceptual designs to life.”

The Google 3D Warehouse is a free Google service which allows anyone to search for and download 3D models and content via a standard Web browser and now, with this plug-in, Photoshop CS3 Extended. Users can also submit their own models to share within the community by uploading them from Google SketchUp into the 3D Warehouse. Models include everything needed for a 3D world, including: buildings, houses, bridges, statues, sculptures, couches, cars, people, pets and more. If the model has a location on earth, such as a building in New York city, you can also download and view it in Google Earth.

Once downloaded, the plug-in opens a dialog box that connects directly to Google’s 3D Warehouse via the Internet. Users can browse and search the 3D Warehouse for content, and download and save selections to their hard drive. Downloaded models will be saved in the COLLADA format. With support for industry standard 3D formats, including COLLADA, Photoshop CS3 Extended opens 3D models as 3D layers. Users can then access the textures applied to model surfaces, enhance them with Photoshop CS3 Extended and its wide range of editing and painting tools, and save or composite them into a 2-D image.

“Our work with Google brings 3D content directly into the Photoshop CS3 Extended experience, enabling more efficient editing and enriching the overall visualization process,” said Kevin Connor, senior director of product management for Digital Imaging Professional Products at Adobe. “Photoshop CS3 Extended was developed to help professionals push the limits of digital imaging and more easily realize their vision in 3D. It’s great to see Google’s early support for Photoshop CS3 Extended and the advancement of 3D design workflows.”

Pricing and Availability
Announced in March 2007, Photoshop CS3 Extended software, an entirely new version of Photoshop, helps professionals discover new dimensions in digital imaging, harnessing everything in Photoshop CS3 plus groundbreaking tools for 3D, motion graphics, image measurement and analysis.

Photoshop CS3 VM Buffering Optional Extensions-MAC Only http://photoshopnews.com/2007/05/29/photoshop-cs3-vm-buffering-optional-extensions-mac-only/ http://photoshopnews.com/2007/05/29/photoshop-cs3-vm-buffering-optional-extensions-mac-only/#comments Tue, 29 May 2007 17:55:52 +0000 PSN Editorial Staff http://photoshopnews.com/2007/05/29/photoshop-cs3-vm-buffering-optional-extensions-mac-only/ Adobe has released optional plug-in extensions for the purpose of altering Photoshop CS3 and Photoshop CS3 Extended’s method of caching when a Macintosh computer has over 4 gigs of ram installed.

From the Read Me:
(note, the Read Me is not included in the download and is available only from the download location)

VM BUFFERING IN PHOTOSHOP CS3
On Macintosh computers, Photoshop can directly access up to about 3.5GB. When there is more than 3.5GB of document data, Photoshop writes data to its scratch files as necessary. On a computer with 4GB or less of RAM, the data is transferred directly between the scratch files on disk and the Photoshop RAM. On a computer with more than 4GB of RAM, Photoshop tells the operating system to use the extra RAM as a buffer for the Photoshop scratch file. In this case, when document data no longer fits in the 3.5GB of Photoshop RAM and is written to the scratch file, the operating system stores it in the extra RAM and can retrieve it from there much faster than it could be read from disk. This lets Photoshop take advantage of more than 4GB of RAM to significantly increase performance with very large documents.

When this scratch file buffering is turned on with Mac OS X v.10.3 or 10.4, the operating system periodically pauses execution of Photoshop for up to several seconds at a time. This can cause problems when painting. Installing the plug-in causes Photoshop to disable the buffering so the pauses do not occur. It also means that Photoshop only takes advantage of the 3.5GB of RAM it can directly access, so performance with very large documents will decrease.

VM BUFFERING OPTIONAL PLUG-INS
You can chose for Photoshop to disable or force VM Buffering via two optional plug-ins.  If you use very large documents and have no problems with pauses during painting, you should install the force VM Buffering plug-in.  If you do not use very large documents or have problems with pauses during painting, we recommend that you install the Disable VM Buffering plug-in.

To install either of the VM Buffering optional plug-ins:

  • Make sure the Adobe Photoshop application is not currently running.
  • Install the plug-in by dragging it into the Plug-Ins folder inside the Adobe Photoshop CS3 folder. The full path is: /Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS3/Plug-Ins.
  • Launch Photoshop. The VM Buffering plug-in(s) will be loaded.

It should be noted that running both plug-ins at once is not recommended. You should have only one plug-in active at launch.

Written by Marius Oiaga, Technology News Editor

A crack designed to activate Adobe Photoshop Creative Suite 3 Extended brings to the table a tad more than the users have bargained for. When it comes to pirated materials, there is no such thing as free. This truism is reinforced by the Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended keygen authored by “macROSS.” The Key generator is being offered as a free method to circumvent the activation mechanism of Photoshop CS3 Extended.

While the genuine products from Adobe come with consistent price tags, Photoshop CS3 is available for $649 and Photoshop CS3 Extended for no less than $999, the key generator is completely free. Well, the fact of the matter is that free is more of a concept, and it applies strictly to financial transactions. Because the Photoshop CS3 crack from “macROSS” is anything but free, and it will end up costing users more than a legitimate license.

“Password crackers and key generators have long been the bane of commercial software companies because they allow users to circumvent their protection mechanisms without the need to purchase their software. As a result, it should come as no surprise that some malware authors prey on this particularly vulnerable group of users,” SophosLabs warned.

Bought Photoshop, but really want Extended? http://photoshopnews.com/2007/05/14/bought-photoshop-but-really-want-extended/ http://photoshopnews.com/2007/05/14/bought-photoshop-but-really-want-extended/#comments Mon, 14 May 2007 17:06:33 +0000 Jeff Schewe http://photoshopnews.com/2007/05/14/bought-photoshop-but-really-want-extended/ John Nack on his Adobe blog posts about “Buyer’s Remorse” (or that sinking feeling you get when you think you’ve bought the wrong version) that some people are feeling after opting not to get the Photoshop CS3 Extended upgrade.

Says John:

In the last few days, a couple of people have remarked that they’ve purchased Photoshop CS3, only to realize later that they really want Photoshop Extended.  There’s no upgrade path that lets you go CS3->CS3 Extended for less than the price of the CS2->Extended upgrade, but you do have another option: Adobe Customer Service can work with you to return your standard license, then purchase an upgrade to Extended instead.

They point out that only customers within the 30-day money back guarantee window can return/swap product; more details on that.

CS3: Switching platforms, free upgrades http://photoshopnews.com/2007/05/10/cs3-switching-platforms-free-upgrades/ http://photoshopnews.com/2007/05/10/cs3-switching-platforms-free-upgrades/#comments Thu, 10 May 2007 20:28:38 +0000 PSN Editorial Staff http://photoshopnews.com/2007/05/10/cs3-switching-platforms-free-upgrades/ From John Nack’s Adobe blog comes this bit of info regarding upgrades and platform switches…

Q. Can I switch my product from Windows to Mac or vice-versa?
A. Yes. Just call Adobe Customer Service (800-833-6687 in the US; 020 7365 0733 in the UK; more country-by-country numbers here) for assistance. The process, as I understand it, involves signing an agreement stating that you’ve destroyed the product on one platform, and in return Adobe will send you the product for the other platform.  According to the service folks, there may be a cost involved; verification of product is required; and restrictions apply.

Q. Why are Customer Service hold times so long?
A. The CS3 launch is far and away the single biggest in Adobe’s history, and during the first week or so I heard many stories of long waits on hold.  I’m not surprised that the phone lines were slammed, and although I’m not hearing the reports now, you may want to open a Web support case instead of calling, or contact us during non-peak business hours.

Q. I purchased a CS2 product after CS3 was announced.  Do I qualify for a free upgrade to CS3?
A. Yes. Again, call Customer Service in your region to discuss the details. Verification of CS2 product is required and restrictions apply.  When in doubt, call; these folks are there help.

This document can help you to resolve system errors that occur while you use Adobe Photoshop CS3 on Windows Vista. System errors can manifest in many different ways, including (but not limited to) the following:

  • A blank or flickering dialog box
  • A frozen cursor or screen
  • A blue screen
  • An unexpected restart
  • An error such as one of the following:

“This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.”
“Photoshop caused a General Protection Fault in module [filename].”
“Photoshop caused an Invalid Page Fault in module [filename].”
“Application Error.”
“Unhandled exception detected. Application will be terminated.”
“Illegal Instruction.”
“Segment load failure in [filename].”
“Photoshop has encountered a problem and needs to close.”
“Fatal System Error.”
A STOP error
Many different factors can cause system errors, including conflicts among device drivers, applications, operating system settings, hardware, and corrupt elements in specific files. Although a system error may occur only when you work with Photoshop, Photoshop may not necessarily be the cause–it may be the only application that uses enough memory or processor cycles to expose the problem.

To benefit most from this document, perform the tasks in order. Keep track of the tasks that you perform and the results of each, including errors and other problems. Adobe Technical Support can use this information to better assist you if you need to call.

This document can help you resolve system errors that occur while you use Adobe Photoshop CS3 in Mac OS. System errors can manifest themselves in many different ways, including (but not limited to) the following:

  • A blank or flickering dialog box
  • A frozen cursor or screen
  • An error such as, “The application ‘Photoshop’ has unexpectedly quit. The system and other applications have not been affected.”

Different factors can cause system errors, including conflicts among device drivers, software, and hardware, and corrupt elements in specific files. Although a system error may occur only when you work with Photoshop, Photoshop may not necessarily be the cause–it may be the only application that uses enough memory or processor cycles to expose the problem.

To benefit most from this document, perform the tasks in order. Keep track of the tasks you perform and the results of each task, including errors or problematic behavior. Adobe Technical Support can use this information to better assist you, if you need to call.

Uninstall CS3 Betas before installing GM version http://photoshopnews.com/2007/04/16/uninstall-cs3-betas-before-installing-gm-version/ http://photoshopnews.com/2007/04/16/uninstall-cs3-betas-before-installing-gm-version/#comments Mon, 16 Apr 2007 15:37:16 +0000 PSN Editorial Staff http://photoshopnews.com/2007/04/16/uninstall-cs3-betas-before-installing-gm-version/ From John Nack’s blog; One important note:  If you’ve installed a beta build of Photoshop, Flash, Soundbooth, or other CS3 software, you must first uninstall the app(s) before installing the shipping versions:

  • On the Mac, the uninstaller is in Applications/Utilities/Adobe Installers.  Note: You cannot uninstall by dragging CS3 applications to the trash; instead, you must use the uninstaller.
  • On Windows XP, uninstall via Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.
  • On Windows Vista, in the Programs section of the Control Panel, select Uninstall a Program.

If you experience problems with the uninstall or the install, you may need to use the Adobe CS3 Clean Script which will be available within a few days.
