One report by Buko, on the Mac Photoshop User to User forum reports that the beta will expire on May 2nd. Other reports claim May 5th (which also happens to be Cinco de Mayo). In any event, rest assured that the beta will expire soon.

For those who still have the Beta installed, Adobe suggests (really emphatically) that you must remove the beta properly before installing the final release version.

On the Mac, the uninstaller is in Applications/Utilities/Adobe Installers. Note: You cannot uninstall by dragging CS3 applications to the trash; instead, you must use the uninstaller.

On Windows XP, uninstall via Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

On Windows Vista, in the Programs section of the Control Panel, select Uninstall a Program.

To aid in the manual removal, Adobe has posted TechNotes regarding how to remove the beta.

Manually Remove Photoshop CS3 public beta (Mac OS X)

Manually Remove Photoshop CS3 public beta (Windows XP)

Manually remove Photoshop CS3 public beta (Windows Vista)

Adobe has also posted scripts for the removal of the beta, see:

Manually removing Photoshop CS3 public beta ensures that all files and folders are removed. Please note that these instructions are for removing Photoshop CS3 public beta. This document covers removing Adobe Photoshop CS3 public beta on Mac OS X. For instructions explaining how to remove Photoshop CS3 public beta manually on Windows XP and Windows Vista, see “Additional information” below.

    Overview

Adobe recommends that you use the Add or Remove Adobe Photoshop CS3 uninstaller in Applications/Utilities/Adobe Installers to remove Photoshop CS3 public beta from your computer. Occasionally, however, damaged files or a partial installation may prevent the Photoshop CS3 public beta uninstaller from working correctly or may cause the uninstaller to leave files or empty application folders on the system after the removal is performed.

Manually removing Photoshop CS3 public beta ensures that all files and folders are removed. Please note that these instructions are for removing Photoshop CS3 public beta. If you have other/previous versions of Adobe applications installed, then be sure to remove only the files below that relate to Photoshop CS3 public beta. These steps also remove any extra content (for example, Goodies or Functional Content) that you may have installed with Photoshop CS3 public beta.

Note: Your system may not contain all of the files and folders listed in this document. If you do not find a listed file or folder on your system, then you should proceed to the next file or folder on the list.

    Deactivate

Before you remove an application, you must deactivate it.

To deactivate Photoshop CS3, choose Help > Deactivate, and follow the on-screen instructions.

Remove Photoshop CS3 public beta using the uninstaller

The uninstaller is designed to remove everything installed by Photoshop CS3 public beta. When you start Photoshop CS3 public beta for the first time, or when you modify the preferences, new folders and files may be created. To ensure the complete removal of all additional folders and files, proceed to “Remove remaining folders and files for Photoshop CS3 public beta” below after you use the uninstaller.

    To use the uninstaller:

    • Go to Applications/Utilities/Adobe Installers.
    • Double click Add Or Remove Adobe Photoshop CS3.
    • Authenticate with your user name and password.
    • Select Remove Adobe Photoshop CS3 Components, and click Next.
    • Follow the on-screen instructions.
    • Remove remaining folders and files for Photoshop CS3 public beta

Back up any personal files you want to save from the following directories, and then remove the listed folders and files:

Note : Your other Adobe applications may be affected by removing these files.

    • Users/[User Name]/Library/Preferences [any files and folders with CS3 in the name]

Press Release: SAN JOSE, Calif. and LAS VEGAS, Nevada – March 8, 2007 – Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced at the Photo Marketing Association (PMA) show that it will expand its digital imaging product line, offering two editions of Adobe(r) Photoshop(r) CS3. In addition to the highly anticipated Photoshop CS3 software for designers and professional photographers, Adobe will also deliver Photoshop CS3 Extended, a completely new edition of Photoshop which allows cross-media creative professionals to stretch the limits of digital imaging.

Photoshop CS3 Extended includes everything in Photoshop CS3 plus a new set of capabilities for integration of 3-D and motion graphics, image measurement and analysis. Photoshop CS3 Extended also simplifies the workflow for professionals in architecture, engineering, medical and science.

Both Photoshop CS3 and Photoshop CS3 Extended software will be formally introduced on March 27, 2007 – as part of the company’s launch of Creative Suite 3, where further details will be disclosed. The software is expected to ship in Spring 2007.

“We never imagined that Photoshop would someday help make major motion pictures, let alone save lives,” said John Loiacono, senior vice president of the Creative Solutions Business Unit at Adobe. “Whether it’s a video producer texture editing the backdrop of a movie or a researcher counting hundreds of cancer cells, diverse industries are already relying on the professional standard in digital imaging.”

Breadth of Advanced Features in Photoshop CS3 Extended
With Photoshop CS3 Extended, film, video and multimedia professionals, and graphic and web designers can leverage the power of the Photoshop image-editing toolset and paint engine when editing 3D and motion-based content. Film and video specialists can perform 3-D model visualization and texture editing, paint and clone over multiple video frames. Animators can now render and incorporate rich 3-D content into their 2-D compositions. Graphic and web designers can create an animation from a series of images – such as time series data – and export it to a wide variety of formats, including QuickTime, MPEG-4 and Adobe Flash(r) Video.

Adobe Unveils Plans for Two Editions of Photoshop CS3

“The National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP) is over 60,000 members strong and as it continues to grow, so do the variety of uses for Photoshop,” said Scott Kelby, president of NAPP. “Photoshop CS3 Extended will further redefine who the ‘creative professional’ is, allowing cross-media professionals to really push the limits of their craft, while also inviting engineers, scientists and architects to add the power of Photoshop to their arsenal.”

Photoshop CS3 Extended also enables users to extract valuable quantitative and qualitative data from images. In addition to measurement and analysis tools, architects, medical professionals and scientists will enjoy increased support for specialized image formats so they can easily view, annotate, and edit images in their native format. Radiologists can closely monitor a patient’s progress over time, scientific researchers can create animations from medical images for presentation purposes, and architects can make accurate measurements of objects in their 3-D images.

“With the release of two new editions of Photoshop, Adobe continues to push the boundaries with innovative tools that empower people to communicate visually in powerful new ways,” said Alexis Gerard, author of “Going Visual” and president of Future Image Inc., hosts of the 6Sight(r) Future of Imaging conference. “While Photoshop CS3 will remain the digital imaging standard for photographers, Photoshop CS3 Extended is bringing to new audiences the proven benefit of Photoshop, and also exploring feature sets that eventually may benefit a broader market.”

PixeGenius Releases UB Beta Versions of Plug-ins For Mac http://photoshopnews.com/2007/01/08/pixegenius-releases-ub-beta-versions-of-plug-ins-for-mac/ http://photoshopnews.com/2007/01/08/pixegenius-releases-ub-beta-versions-of-plug-ins-for-mac/#comments Mon, 08 Jan 2007 20:04:30 +0000 PSN Editorial Staff http://photoshopnews.com/2007/01/08/pixegenius-releases-ub-beta-versions-of-plug-ins-for-mac/

PixelGenius, the makers of PhotoKit, PhotoKit Sharpener and PhotoKit Color 2.0 have released betas of Universal Binary (UB) versions of their products. These UB versions are needed for the Mac version of the Photoshop CS3 public beta whether you are running a PPC or Intel machine. With the release of Photoshop CS3 beta, all developers of plug-ins will need to release Universal Binary versions of their plug-ins in order to work with MacIntel from Apple.

The UB betas are only needed by Macintosh users. The current shipping versions of the plug-ins will install and run properly under Photoshop CS3 for Windows.

These UB versions are considered “beta” in that while PG has tested them and find them to work in the public beta version of Photoshop CS3, there are still certain issues that will be addressed when Photoshop CS3 ships in it’s final form later in 2007 (estimated release date is Q2, 2007 according to Adobe). The downloads page contains additional information regarding known issues as well as installation instructions.

If you are testing Photoshop CS3 on a Macintosh but you’ve previously purchased Windows versions and have switched to Mac, your Windows serial numbers will work in these Mac UB betas. PixelGenius is considering a policy change for all PG customers that would allow purchases that will have cross platform serial numbers. PG should have an announcement regarding cross platform licensing when the final versions of their products are released for CS3.

The Secret Life of Smart Filters http://photoshopnews.com/2006/12/28/the-secret-life-of-smart-filters/ http://photoshopnews.com/2006/12/28/the-secret-life-of-smart-filters/#comments Thu, 28 Dec 2006 06:32:29 +0000 Jeff Schewe http://photoshopnews.com/2006/12/28/the-secret-life-of-smart-filters/ John Nack is on a roll…I can tell it’s holiday time at Adobe because John must be really bored-no engineers to push around. He’s posting a lot of interesting things on his blog, John Nack on Adobe. The most recent post is The Secret Life of Smart Filters.

John talks a bit about the history of how Smart Filters came about and why the previous incarnation called “Filter Layers” was yanked from Photoshop CS1 during development because, well, they didn’t work real good (ok, they sucked on a performance level). Based upon what the dev team learned about Filter Layers, a Photoshop CS2 feature called Smart Objects was born. Now in Photoshop CS3, re-editable filters have reappeared called Smart Filters.

    sf-dlog.jpgsf-palette.jpg

I particularly enjoyed his explanation (defense?) of the name “Smart Objects”:

Okay, about the name: I technically work in marketing, but I hate cheesy names, and making everything “live” this or “smart” that starts to have a whiff of fromage to it. Finding a simple, factual name proved difficult for a feature that’s really general–one that enables, among other things:

    • Turning one or more layers into something that can be scaled, rotated, or warped losslessly
    • Creating multiple instances, all of which update when one is edited
    • Preserving complex vector data & re-editing it in Illustrator
    • Preserving raw data & re-editing it in Camera Raw
    • Potentially enabling linking to external files

    Working with the Clone Source palette in CS3 http://photoshopnews.com/2006/12/28/working-with-the-clone-source-palette-in-cs3/ http://photoshopnews.com/2006/12/28/working-with-the-clone-source-palette-in-cs3/#comments Thu, 28 Dec 2006 05:35:01 +0000 PSN Editorial Staff http://photoshopnews.com/2006/12/28/working-with-the-clone-source-palette-in-cs3/ evening-sm.jpgMartin Evening’s Favorite Photoshop CS3 Feature?
    The new Clone Source palette

Pubished here is a tutorial extract is taken from Martin Evening’s forthcoming book: Adobe Photoshop CS3 for Photographers, published by Focal Press. In this tutorial, Martin demonstrates some of the key new benefits that can be gained from working with the new Clone Source palette in the newly released public beta version of Adobe Photoshop CS3. To find out more about how to use this new feature, read on…

The Clone Source palette is new to Photoshop and useful for photographic retouching mainly because it allows you to see a preview of the alignment of the pixels that you are about to clone with. All the other features, such as the multiple sample points are really of more use for people working in video editing, where it is desirable to store multiple clone sources when you want to clone in exact registration from one frame to another across several images in a sequence.

    clonestamp-01.jpg

    1. Here is a photograph in which there is a litter bin that I wish to remove. But the tricky thing here is that the bin is just in front of a circular alcove, and this would normally make it less easy to remove. But not so if you use the controls avialable in the Clone Source palette.

    clonestamp-02.jpg

    2. To start with, I wanted to remove the bottom of the bin. This could be done normally by placing the source point for the clone stamp on the edge of the black line and estimating where to click with the clone stamp so that you can continue painting along the line ‘in register’.

    clone-stamp-02aa.jpg
    3. By using the Clone Source palette, I can now switch on the Show Overlay option and adjust the opacity, so that with the Auto Hide option turned on as well, when I release the mouse, I get to see a ghost image preview of how the pixels will be painted at the destination point. This takes away all the guess work and makes it much easier to paint with the clone stamp in perfect alignment with the underlying image.

    clonestamp-03.jpg

    4. I now switched tools and selected the healing brush. And this time I went to the Clone Source palette and set the clone source angle to be 180º relative to the destination. This meant that when I sampled using the pixels from the top right corner of the curve, the preview showed a 180º rotated preview of where the the pixels would be painted at the destination point. Again, the overlay was very important, because I could use it to precisely align the preview with the image below, so that the edge of the circle was precisely aligned.

    clonestamp-04.jpg

    5. Here is a screenshot showing the healing brush in action.

    clone-stamp-03aa.jpg
    6. Because I had the Auto Hide option checked still, the overlay was temporarily hidden as I painted.

    clonestamp-05.jpg

    7. And here is the final result, in which I only had to carry out some minor extra retouching in order to tidy up the remaining parts of the picture.

    Overlay blend modes
You can adjust the opacity of the Clone Source overlay and change the blend mode as well. In some instances you may find it useful to work with the Difference blend mode at 100%. The Difference blend mode will show a solid black preview when identical pixels are in register.

    Written by Rob Griffiths

Last month, in the first part of my three-part report (parts two and three) on the new Mac Pro, I reported on Photoshop’s performance in Rosetta—both subjectively and objectively (on page three) via a test of the Liquify filter.

I’ve used this same test on other machines—both Windows XP and Macs—so it’s become my personal benchmark. And now that I have the Universal beta of Photoshop to use, I thought I’d update my results for the Universal version. As you look at these results, please keep in mind they’re my own personal handiwork, and not that of the Macworld Labs—here are the official benchmark results.

As background for those who haven’t read the prior articles, I apply a 54MB saved Liquify mesh to the 3,000-by-2,400 pixel version of this image of a space shuttle launch. It’s an intensive filter, and takes a meaningful amount of time to render, so any errors in my hand timing don’t have a huge impact on the results.

And speaking of results, how did the Mac Pro running the CS3 beta do? Take a look…

The plug-in update is required for all filters and plug-ins in order to load in Photoshop CS3 running on MacIntel machines. The SDK, along with the CS and CS2 versions, is a free download once you fill out a simple form.

All filter plug-in developers will also need to updated their plug-ins in order to have them run as non-destructive Smart Filters in CS3.

Is Photoshop CS3 a 64 bit app? http://photoshopnews.com/2006/12/22/is-photoshop-cs3-a-64-bit-app/ http://photoshopnews.com/2006/12/22/is-photoshop-cs3-a-64-bit-app/#comments Fri, 22 Dec 2006 17:56:24 +0000 PSN Editorial Staff http://photoshopnews.com/2006/12/22/is-photoshop-cs3-a-64-bit-app/ Another contentious topic to be found on the Photoshop CS3 forum is the question of whether or not Photoshop CS3 will be a real 64 bit application or remain a 32 bit application as it has been for a good long while. The hardware and OS vendors have done a good job of hyping 64 bit OS as the next big new thing, but unfortuately, the hype always precedes the reality.

To counter the cries for a full 64 bit rewrite of Photoshop, Scott Byer (Photoshop co-architect) has posted a story on his Living Photoshop blog entitled 64 bits…when?

    Scott says:

I’ve gotten a number of questions on the beta forums as to why Photoshop CS3 won’t have a 64-bit version. It’s definitely a when question, not an if, and there are a lot of factors involved. I though I might collect some of the information together here.

First, let’s check all the 64-bit hype at the door. Being a 64-bit program means, most simply, that pointers in an application are 64 bits wide, not 32 bits. A 32 bit pointer means that an application can address 2 ^ 32 bytes of memory, or 4GB, at the most. The operating system an application runs on slices that application address space up, so that the application can actually only allocate a part of that address space for itself.

Thus, on Windows XP, an application can use 2GB of address space, on Macintosh OS X 10.4, an application gets 3GB, on Windows XP 64-bit edition, a 32-bit application gets nearly 4GB of address space. Applications don’t allocate RAM on most modern operating systems – that’s a common misconception and a gross oversimplification your computer geek friends tell you because they don’t want to explain virtual memory, TLBs and the like.
