On news stands this month: Bruce Fraser and Jeff Schewe team up to write an authoritative cover article for the April/May issue of Photoshop User magazine. The six page article, Shooting in the RAW–the naked truth about advanced Camera Raw talks about controlling all the editing power and flexibility of Camera Raw without over-cooking your brain.
“Many photographers have come to enjoy the enormous flexibility that RAW provides over JPEG. When shooting RAW, the image is wide open for interpretation–a simple yank of some controls makes a vast difference to the rendering of your image.
But what are you supposed to pull and how do you decide what your image is supposed to look like?” –Bruce Fraser and Jeff Schewe

Like any new Photoshop release, Photoshop CS2 has plenty of new features and enhancements to old ones, but if I have to pick one single feature that has changed the way I use the program, it has to be the addition of a Curve tab in the Camera Raw plug-in. It may seem a small thing, but this feature has completely flipped the balance between the amount of time I spend in Camera Raw and the amount of time I spend in Photoshop. My friend and colleague Jeff Schewe has jokingly referred to Photoshop as a plug-in for Camera Raw. I can only say that never has a truer word been spoken in jest!

Current Photoshop CS users may not completely understand the policy regarding forward updates to Camera Raw and wheher or not new updates will work in Photoshop CS. The answer is that with the release of Photoshop CS2 and Camera Raw 3, all new updates to Camera Raw will only work in “currently shipping software” which means Photoshop CS2 (when it ships) and Photoshop Elements 3.0 or above. Camera Raw 2.4 is the last update for CR 2.x.
It should be noted that the free DNG Converter will continue to be updated to add support for new cameras released. The workaround for those people not using Photoshop CS2 & CR 3 will be to process raw files with the DNG Converter and then use Camera Raw 2.4 to open–since DNG is supported by Camera Raw 2.4.

Here’s how. . .
