Photoshop CS3 had some mixed reviews. It didn’t have quite as many features of interest to photographers as say, previous versions of the program. I think such responses may also have been influenced by the introduction of Lightroom 1, which was definitely designed with photographers in mind. It is probably fair to say that there was a certain amount of envy among the Photoshop team to the ‘new kid on the block’. Well, Photoshop CS4 has arrived, hot on the heels of Lightroom 2 and it’s time to see how the new version of the ‘mother ship’ program shapes up.

As far as Photoshop CS4 itself goes, I think photographers will be very pleased with some the new changes here. Photoshop now has a smart dark gray interface and adopted a task-based approach to image editing and this can be seen in the way image adjustments are now accessible within their own panel. When you combine this with the ability to non-destuctively edit a layer mask, you’ll discover that the  Photoshop CS4 image editing system offers the most flexible yet for pixel image editing.

Adobe’s Update Servers are Problematic http://photoshopnews.com/2007/11/19/adobes-update-servers-are-problematic/ http://photoshopnews.com/2007/11/19/adobes-update-servers-are-problematic/#comments Mon, 19 Nov 2007 05:00:00 +0000 PSN Editorial Staff http://photoshopnews.com/2007/11/19/adobes-update-servers-are-problematic/ Since the release of a slew of updates late Thursday night, November 15th, 2007, many users have downloaded updates for Photoshop CS3, Bridge CS3, Camera Raw 4.3 and Lightroom 1.3. However, many people seem unable to get to the product updates because regional servers have been slow to get updated URLS.

Usually, going to the New Downloads urls will allow users access to all the recently uploaded updates for all of Adobe’s products. However, many users from outside of the US and Canada are reporting that when they attempt to access the same download links, they are getting “not found” errors.

The problem is thought to be a failure of mirrored servers getting properly updated urls throughout Adobe’s extensive network. While some people in northern Europe like Sweden don’t seem to have a problem, users in the UK can not seem to get to the same download pages.

In the meantime, if your Adobe Updater can’t seem to find the updates or your locale’s local country servers haven’t been updated, you should still be able to access Adobe’s public FTP servers. The main public FTP is ftp://adobe.com.

To access Photoshop updates (including Camera Raw) go to: ftp://adobe.com/pub/adobe/photoshop.

To access Bridge updates, go to: ftp://adobe.com/pub/adobe/bridge.

To access Lightroom updates, go to: ftp://adobe.com/pub/adobe/lightroom.

It seems like Adobe is in a frenzy to update everything in the Photoshop family and now the Bridge CS3 update to version 2.1.1 is available for download (no word yet on Adobe Updater).

The Macintosh Bridge CS3 (2.1.1) Update is here.

The Windows Bridge CS3 (2.1.1) Update is here.

The Adobe Bridge CS3 2.1.1 update includes the following fixes and enhancements:

  • A new preference to enable High Quality Preview has been added to Bridge’s Preferences > Advanced panel. When enabled, the preference addresses the problem of a soft or blurry preview appearing in the Preview panel and in Slideshow mode.
  • Data loss that could result from replacing a folder with another folder by the same name has been prevented.
  • Issues that could cause Bridge to crash (for example, when encountering a PDF or AI file) have been corrected.
  • A problem that could cause Bridge to lock up when using arrows to navigate has been fixed.
  • XMP data is now handled correctly when added to CR2 files.
  • A problem that could cause the Loupe tool not to be available after exiting from Slideshow mode has been corrected.
  • Rapid clicks to select multiple files are no longer interpreted as a double-click, so unintended opening of multiple files is now reduced.

All components of Bridge must be updated to provide stable and robust performance. The following components (released previously) provide important updates to search and collection functionality:

• Adobe Version Cue® Client 3.1.0 update
• Adobe Asset Services 3.1.0 update

If you are using Adobe Version Cue Server, the following update is required:

• Adobe Version Cue Server 3.1.0 update.

Adobe Media Gallery (AMG) for Adobe Bridge adds quick, powerful Web gallery creation to Adobe Photoshop CS3, Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended and the Adobe Creative Suite. AMG makes it possible to create HTML or Flash-based galleries from any of the file formats supported by Bridge; adjust the galleries using built-in preview; and export the results or upload them via FTP. (Note: requires the Bridge 2.1 Update)

AMG is available on both Mac and Windows. The download package includes both the plug-in as well as AMG templates, all of the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom default templates, as well as the Lightroom HTML Gallery.

Known Issues

  • After installing on Mac you may be prompted the first time you launch Bridge asking whether to load the new script. When you hit ok – you still need to quit and restart Bridge in order to load the Adobe Media Gallery workspace.
  • Changing text in text fields does not always ‘take’ until clicking on another edit field to commit the change.
  • Bridge and Adobe Media Gallery have a focus issue on Windows that prevents the user from cutting and pasting text into the Adobe Media Gallery edit fields using keyboard shortcuts. You can, however, right click to copy and paste text in the Adobe Media Gallery Panel.
  • “Your Name:” and “E-Mail Address” aren’t the same when switching to the Lightroom Flash Gallery or HTML Gallery template that use “Contact Info” and “Web or Mail Link:”
  • Selecting a style from the “– load style -” pop-up list, it doesn’t change the pop-up to the name of the selected style. It does however load the selected style colors and layout options correctly.
  • If the very first time you run Adobe Media Gallery you save a gallery before you do an “AMG Preview” or “Browser Preview” the Flash Player Trust gets written out incorrectly. Workarounds: Preview a gallery using “AMG Preview” or “Browser Preview” the very first time you run Adobe Media Gallery. If you’ve saved a gallery before previewing, delete the AdobeMediaGallery.cfg file and do an “AMG Preview” or “Browser Preview” before saving your gallery. See the FAQ for additional information.

FAQs

Q: Does Adobe Media Gallery work with Bridge CS3 2.0?
A: No. You must get the Bridge CS3 2.1 update in order to run Adobe Media Gallery.

Q: How do I start using Adobe Media Gallery after I install it?
A: You load Adobe Media Gallery by choosing it’s workspace in Bridge. Go to the Window menu, select the Workspaces submenu and choose “Adobe Media Gallery.” Consult the Quick Start Guide for an introduction to using Adobe Media Gallery.

Q: When I preview a gallery using AMG Preview or Browser Preview, only some of the images are displayed.
A: Adobe Media Gallery only uses the first 10 images for preview purposes. When you save or upload a gallery, Adobe Media Gallery will use all of your selected images to generate the final gallery.

Q: When I select a style from the “– load style -” it doesn’t change the pop-up to the name of the selected style.
A: Even though the name doesn’t stick, it does load the selected style colors and layout options correctly. Use can this pop-up to load a different style, or simply reset any custom colors or options you have chosen back to the default settings.

Q: After I preview the gallery and I then I change a color settings or change the name of a field, the preview doesn’t automatically update to show the new color or string.
A: You must click either [AMG Preview] or [Browser Preview] to see any updates.

Q: When I preview in Browser, sometimes the style changes don’t update.
A: Sometimes browsers cache the style information. Hold down the shift key and click the reload page button in the browser to force the browser to flush it’s cache.

Q: When I choose “Extra Large” for my Preview Image Options, it takes much longer to render my web gallery.
A: Adobe Media Gallery uses the rendered High Quality Previews for generating galleries using Small, Medium and Large settings. If you choose Extra Large, Adobe Media Gallery uses the full size image file to generate the images which is slower than using the High Quality Previews. If High Quality Previews aren’t already rendered when you go to create a gallery using the smaller preview sizes, a gallery can also take a longer time to generate.

Q: When I create a gallery using “Extra Large” for my Preview Image Options, the images are too small for the HTML Preview area.
A: If your images are smaller than selected destination size chosen in Image Options, Adobe Media Gallery will not upscale your images, and exports the images at their original size. Choose a smaller preview size in Image Options for images that are smaller in scale.

Q: There’s no Image Options for Thumbnails with the HTML template.
A: The HTML template has fixed sized thumbnails.

Q: How do I save presets/styles from Adobe Media Gallery?
A: There isn’t a way to save permanent presets directly from the Adobe Media Gallery interface. Adobe Media Gallery will remember your last custom settings between sessions. You can create your own personal permanent templates you can save/load and share by editing the style.xml templates in the MediaGallery folder in the Bridge CS3 Extensions folder here: Mac: /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Bridge CS3 Extensions/MediaGallery/resources/templates/ Windows: C:/Program Files/Common Files/Adobe/Adobe/Bridge CS3 Extensions/MediaGallery/resources/templates/

Q: The colors aren’t shared between all of the templates.
A: The first 8 templates are related Adobe Media Gallery templates: Standard (Medium Thumbnails, Left Filmstrip (Medium Thumbnails), Left Filmstrip (Large Thumbnails), Filmstrip, Journal with Filmstrip, Journal with Slideshow, and Slideshow. These 8 Galleries all share the same style and share any custom color and layout settings you choose. The Lightroom Flash Gallery stores it’s own custom color and layout settings, as does the HTML Gallery.

Q: Why is the Adobe Media Gallery panel a different color from the rest of Bridge?
A: The Adobe Media Gallery panel is created through ExtendScript and Script UI and doesn’t have the same visual look and feel capabilities as the rest of Bridge.

Q: How can I make the Content panel at the bottom of the Adobe Media Gallery scroll horizontally like the Filmstrip view in Bridge or Lightroom?
A: Choose “Auto” from the Content panel’s flyout menu to make the content panel scroll horizontal and save a custom workspace.

Q: I don’t like the Adobe Media Gallery Workspace – It looks funny and out of proportion on different size monitors.
A: The Adobe Media Gallery workspace was created to accommodate the smallest supported monitor size. Rearrange and resize the panels into an arrangement that fits your monitor and suits your workflow. Be sure to save a custom workspace.

Q: How does the Copyright Info get applied to exported images?
A: If an image already has Copyright Info in it’s metadata, Adobe Media Gallery preserves and applies the current Copyright Info on export. If the image doesn’t have any Copyright Info already, the custom “Copyright Info:” entered in Adobe Media Gallery is applied to the images that are exported from Adobe Media Gallery.

Q: Is Adobe Media Gallery translated for all languages?
A: No. Adobe Media Gallery is only in English and for evaluation only.

Q: When I load the Adobe Media Gallery workspace, nothing happens.
A: Adobe Media Gallery is a script. It might not be correctly enabled as a startup script. Choose Bridge CS3>Preferences (Mac) or Edit>Preferences (Windows) and select “Startup Scripts” from the left-hand menu. Make sure that Adobe Media Gallery is enabled. If it is not, click the check box next to it’s name, close the preferences and restart Bridge.

Q: I get “Adobe Flash Player Security” dialog every time I do an “AMG Preview” or “Browser Preview” from Adobe Media Gallery.
A: This be a problem if you saved a gallery before you did an “AMG Preview” or “Browser Preview” the very first time you used Adobe Media Gallery. The Save command writes out a bad AdobeMediaGallery.cfg file. Navigate to the AdobeMediaGallery.cfg file and delete, then do an AMG Preview” or “Browser Preview” from Adobe Media Gallery. The correct AdobeMediaGallery.cfg will be generated and you shouldn’t encounter this issue again.

Mac: /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/#Security/FlashPlayerTrust/AdobeMediaGallery.cfg

XP: C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player\#Security\FlashPlayerTrust\AdobeMediaGallery.cfg

Vista: C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\Flash Player\#Security\FlashPlayerTrust\AdobeMediaGallery.cfg

Q: I get “Adobe Flash Player Security” dialog every time I preview a gallery I saved out of Adobe Media Gallery by launching the index.html file from the OS.
A: The Flash Player has security mechanisms to prevent Flash files from accessing the internet from your local hard drive. Click on the [Settings] button in the “Adobe Flash Player Security” dialog and choose the “Edit Locations” pop-up and choose “Add Location…” to add the directories on your computer that you want to allow Flash files to run from.

Q: How do I reset all of the Adobe Media Gallery settings to their defaults?
A: Open Bridge’s preferences dialog and click on Adobe Media Gallery in the left-hand column. Then click the button next to “Restore default gallery settings”

One of the things users will notice is a new application icon which heralds the beginning of the new Creative Suite 3 icon art.

Be aware also that it will take some time to get it downloaded-the Mac version is 684MB (including Bridge and Camera Raw 4) and the Windows version is 355MB. The larger Mac file size is due largely because it’s a Universal Binary that includes both the PPC as well as MacIntel optimized code.

Users will also notice a new splashscreen and more strikingly, a whole new user interface as shown below.

There will be a slew of stories coming out about the new features and functionality included in the Photoshop CS3 beta, chief among them for Mac users is the fact that Photoshop can now finally run natively on MacIntel machines-and the best term to use when describing the speed is FAST, very FAST.

But the public beta also includes a brand new version of Adobe Bridge version 2.0.

This new version sports a new UI and additional functionality that is a jump over Bridge 1.0. First and foremost, the Bridge engineers have tried to make it a lot faster.

Additional new functionality will also be welcomed by users of Photoshop CS2 and Bridge 1.0 including the new Filter panel and the enhanced Preview panel. And, did I mention it was faster?

Bridge 2.0

Click on the image to see larger sized image in a new window.

In Bridge 2.0 you can preview multiple images in the Preview panel.

The Preview panel also has a loupe view that allows close inspection of detail.

Camera Raw 4.0 (alpha)

Click on the image to see larger sized image in a new window.

The Photoshop CS3 beta also includes a new version of Camera Raw, the alpha version of 4.0. The new functionality is very similar to the controls found in Lightroom but the interface is not exactly final. So, it is subject to change.

So, when the downloads start, and new beta users of CS3 can get their hands on it, PhotoshopNews will be posting a variety of stories to help you out. Be sure to check back in the coming days.

For raw shooters who use Adobe Camera Raw as their raw converter, this free set of applications makes it simple to create and manage multiple versions of the same raw document.

Through clever file naming and management, ACR Version Control duplicates and renames the sidecar XMP files that hold the conversion settings for your raw files. This means you can easily create multiple XMP files for the same image, and easily switch from one to the other. The package includes three small applications Create New Version, Set Current Version, and Delete Version.

Simply drag an existing XMP file onto any one of these to create, activate, or delete a version. The package is available for immediate download from http//www.completedigitalphotography.com

The software is free, but youll get a warm fuzzy feeling if you make a donation using the Paypal link at the bottom of either page.

Adobe has at last provided codes that enable UK freelance photography members of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) to join its photography directory.

Adobe’s photography directory is a resource that’s available from within Photoshop and InDesign and is supported by Adobe Bridge. The directory provides access to work and contact details for photographers, and was launched in conjunction with some of the world’s largest photo agencies.

The directory is searchable by city, state and country as well as by photography specialty. It can be accessed directly via the Favorites tab in Adobe Bridge located in Creative Suite 2 and Photoshop CS2. The Adobe Photographers’ Directory will also be available on Adobe.com and Adobe Studio.

Lexar Smart Download To Offer ActiveMemory Functionality For Adobe Creative Suite http://photoshopnews.com/2006/02/27/lexar-smart-download-to-offer-activememory-functionality-for-adobe-creative-suite/ http://photoshopnews.com/2006/02/27/lexar-smart-download-to-offer-activememory-functionality-for-adobe-creative-suite/#comments Mon, 27 Feb 2006 17:45:05 +0000 PSN Editorial Staff http://photoshopnews.com/?p=995 New Module Will Improve Digital Imaging Workflow for Photographers Using Adobe Bridge

Press Release: ORLANDO, Fla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Feb. 27, 2006–Lexar Media, Inc. (Nasdaq: LEXRNews), a world leader in advanced digital media technologies today announced Lexar® Smart Download, an intelligent acquisition plug-in module that will allow photographers to rapidly download and manage images directly from their memory cards via Adobe® Bridge, a component of Adobe Creative Suite (CS2). On display at the Photo Marketing Association International Show (PMA), the new plug-in will make it possible for photographers to leverage advanced features offered by Lexar Professional ActiveMemory(TM) CompactFlash® (CF) and Secure Digital(TM) (SD) flash memory cards and will provide a productivity boost with the ability to manage multiple concurrent downloads using Lexar’s Professional Firewire and USB 2.0 CompactFlash Readers.

“Professional photographers and designers need solutions that will help streamline workflows and allow them more time to concentrate on creative expression,” said Mark Hilton, vice president of Creative Suite products at Adobe. “The Lexar Smart Download plug-in takes advantage of the Adobe open scripting interface by allowing direct image downloads along with important IPTC metadata to Adobe Bridge and Creative Suite 2, a very compelling utility for our customers.”

“The vast audience using this popular image browsing application should appreciate the immediate improvement in the digital imaging workflow provided by Lexar Smart Download,” said John Omvik, director of professional product marketing, Lexar. “Professionals need the ability to have their metadata automatically read and applied throughout the digital imaging process. This valuable plug-in will allow IPTC and captioning information to stay with stored images at every step in the process and will dramatically reduce the administrative redundancies for those photographers who capture many images when using Adobe Bridge to view their content,” he added.

The ActiveMemory System (AMS) is Lexar’s innovative digital photography workflow technology that stores user preferences and host device settings in a protected area on AMS flash memory cards. These settings can only be modified by the host application that created them and can be used to auto-configure multiple AMS-enabled products within the system. Also, these settings are preserved even when the card is re-formatted or other data files on the card are deleted, because the AMS data is stored outside the standard DOS file structure on the card. The AMS functionality coupled with Lexar Smart Download makes it possible to drive concurrent downloads from multiple cards and readers, creating a truly compelling benefit for any serious photographer looking to save real time in their daily workflow.

Beyond AMS, Lexar Smart Download also supports the simultaneous downloading feature of Lexar’s award-winning Professional CompactFlash Readers and will benefit all photographers who look to reduce the time currently required to download stored images via Adobe Bridge. Available in both USB and Firewire formats, Lexar’s Professional CompactFlash Readers are uniquely designed to stack and directly connect to one another (to a hub with USB models) and to the host computer for high-speed, simultaneous download of images stored on multiple flash memory cards. Depending on the volume of flash memory cards and stacked readers, the workflow improvements provided by simultaneously downloading stored contents is unfathomable.

In addition, Lexar Smart Download will support the download of content to primary and secondary destinations (folders) simultaneously. It will also provide the ability to organize images during the downloading process by date, making it possible for photographers to systematically manage their images, files and folders effectively.

Lexar Smart Download will be available as a stand-alone application on Lexar’s direct selling website for $29.95. In addition, Lexar Smart Download will soon be included with all of Lexar’s Professional ActiveMemory CompactFlash and Secure Digital flash memory cards. The plug-in will be available for both Mac OS 10.4 and Windows XP/2000 and is scheduled for release by the end of March. More information on Lexar’s professional products can be found at www.lexar.com.

RapidFixer-A Quicktake Review http://photoshopnews.com/2006/01/26/rapidfixer-a-quicktake-review/ http://photoshopnews.com/2006/01/26/rapidfixer-a-quicktake-review/#comments Fri, 27 Jan 2006 01:33:46 +0000 PSN Editorial Staff http://photoshopnews.com/2006/01/26/rapidfixer-a-quicktake-review/ Source: The Luminous Landscape

Sometimes photographers have little appreciation for what others types of photographers have to deal with. The fine art photographer may go out on a weekend and take a few dozens exposures, while a wedding photographer may come back with many hundreds. A photojournalist or a wildlife photographer may return from a major shoot with many thousands of images.

How each one handles their digital workflow will depend on the photographer’s temperament as well as practical issues.

For working pros, what has come to be called Digital Asset Management is one of the biggest challenges of day-to-day photography. How to ingest images from data cards, then catalogue, index, keyword, raw process, final process and archive them, all while leaving enough time in the day for everything else that needs doing.

DAM Software

In December, 2005 I published a review of the two DAM programs that I use – Photo Mechanic and IView Media Pro. December also saw the introduction of Apple’s Aperture, and then in January, Adobe’s Lightroom Beta One. Both of these are next-generation image processing programs that incorporate a number of DAM capabilities.

Many photographers today use Adobe’s Bridge in conjunction with Camera Raw and Photoshop as their primary image processing and image management applications. Indeed the vast majority of pros probably use Bridge as their primary asset management tool.

As good as it is, Bridge leaves a lot to be desired. That’s why programs like Photo Mechanic and IView Media Pro, along with their competitors, have carved out such a successful niche for themselves. In the future Aperture (Mac only) and Lightroom (Mac + Windows) will likely become preferred tools for many photographers. The reason is that these applications integrate almost every aspect of image processing and management under one consolidated roof.

But Aperture is still in its 1.0 early days, and Lightroom is still in Beta. By the end of 2006 Apple will likely have worked out Aperture’s teething problems and Lightroom will be a powerhouse commercial application.

Till then, Adobe’s Bridge is the traffic circle around which much workflow circulates. With this in mind DamUseful software has just started shipping a new product called RapidFixer, which does a dam good job of solving one of image processing’s current bottlenecks – the separation of image management and raw processing into two separate applications; Bridge and Camera Raw.

Hasselblad warns of incompatibility with Adobe Bridge http://photoshopnews.com/2006/01/04/hasselblad-warns-of-incompatibility-with-adobe-bridge/ http://photoshopnews.com/2006/01/04/hasselblad-warns-of-incompatibility-with-adobe-bridge/#comments Wed, 04 Jan 2006 17:04:37 +0000 PSN Editorial Staff http://photoshopnews.com/2006/01/04/hasselblad-warns-of-incompatibility-with-adobe-bridge/ Source: RobGalbraith.com

Hasselblad has sent a warning to registered users of its digital backs that Adobe Bridge on the Mac will in some cases corrupt the header information inside the company’s proprietary RAW 3f (.fff) file format. An excerpt from the email blast is below:

We have come across a serious issue with using Adobe Bridge on a Mac to alter metadata or ratings of 3f files. When doing this Bridge will add an XMP meta data tag to the file AND unfortunately it will also make some incorrect updates to the 3f TIFF header. This can lead to various results but a typical symptom is that opening the image in FlexColor will show an incorrect noisefilled preview.

Attempts to use the detail view or saving an image will usually work since the raw data itself hasn’t been affected.

Hasselblad and Adobe are working on a solution to this problem, but meanwhile you should not manipulate 3f files in Bridge on a Mac.

Editor’s Note: 3f files are the native file format of FlexColor software. Both digital captures and Imacon scanner scans can be saved in the 3F format.
