LOS ANGELES - Folk wisdom says to quit when you’re ahead. Bruce Chizen seems to be listening.

On Monday, Chizen said he will step down as chief executive of Adobe Systems (nasdaq: ADBE - news - people ) on Dec. 1, to be replaced by the company’s president and chief operating officer, Shantanu Narayen.

Chizen’s departure comes in his seventh year at the helm of the media software company at a time when it can boast of many successes. Its software platforms — Acrobat, for making PDF files, and Flash for displaying videos — are ubiquitous due to the rise of Web 2.0 companies like Google (nasdaq: GOOG - news - people )’s YouTube and Yahoo!’s (nasdaq: YHOO - news - people ) Flickr. Adobe is also planning to launch a Web version of the popular photo-editing software Photoshop by the end of the year.

“I’m at a point in my life where I’d like to take a step back and think about what I want to do next,” Chizen said during a conference call late Monday. “Fortunately the timing could not be better. The company continues to demonstrate strong performance.”
