But what if your computer understood the depth of the image, just as you did when you took the picture, and could be told to just erase everything that’s a certain distance behind your kid?

Worth1000, the perennial Photoshop contest web site has just posted a recent contest titled Counterfeit Art 11–How to tell your fine art is a forgery. The contestants have been taking liberties with the classics…
From the web site come these contest rules: “The rules of this game are thus: You will take any famous painting or artwork (any period is fine) and alter it in such a way that it is obviously a forgery, as in the themepost. As always, quality is a must. We will remove poor entries no matter how much we like you. You’ll have 48 hours to submit for this contest, so make your submission count.”
Hit list: NO celebrities. NO guitars. Use them and get disqualified.

Scientific data are the currency of science, but they often buy little understanding outside science itself–or even outside the narrow confines of a single scientific discipline. But when data are brought to life through images, illustrations, computer graphics, and animations, they can stimulate excitement, awe, new ways of looking at things, and, above all, a broad appreciation of even the most esoteric scientific information.

Culture Secretary James Purnell, who led the Government’s attack on the BBC’s rigged phone-in competitions, is now at the centre of a faking controversy of his own.
Mr Purnell turned up too late for a photo-shoot to promote a new development at a Tameside hospital, so he told the organisers to doctor the picture with fellow MPs to look like he had been there.

HANOVER, N.H. — As Hany Farid sat in his office here at Dartmouth College on a recent morning, he fiddled with his laptop and cracked disconcerting little jokes.
“Don’t ever send me a photograph of yourself,” said Dr. Farid, head of the Image Science Laboratory at Dartmouth. “I’ll do the most terrible things to it.”

Unlike XP’s SP2, this service pack offers mainly under-the-hood changes
Source: ComputerWorld
Written by Preston Gralla
October 01, 2007 (Computerworld) — Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1), just delivered to a group of approximately 12,000 beta testers, offers no dramatic interface changes, nor does it add new features to the operating system. Instead SP1 focuses on improving performance, reliability and application compatibility, and it extends support to emerging hardware such as the exFAT file system that will be used by flash memory storage and consumer devices. However, SP1 does change the way Windows search works, allowing third-party programs such as Google Desktop Search to integrate more easily into the operating system. (See Computerworld review.)
