Things weren’t always this way. Before the digital revolution, life as an illustrator was fairly straightforward, or so it seemed – there was no Bill Gates, no Apple, no Photoshop, no Google, no internet, no email… no hassle. Looking back at life before the revolution, albeit through rose-tinted specs, the working day for your lone illustrator was a fairly simple affair. In fact, depending on just how far back you wish to peer, it’s clear to see just how much has changed.

MARIE CLAIRE Magazine publishes a fake photo of ABCNEWS anchor Elizabeth Vargas — who appears to be breastfeeding her new baby boy at the anchor desk! The controversial photo accompanies a Q & A with Vargas in the December issue.

A source close to the anchor says Vargas’ is disappointed but has a sense of humor about the whole thing. “Elizabeth was more than happy to sit for the interview but was disturbed that the magazine would set aside basic journalistic standards to photoshop her head onto a fake image. Vargas did joke that her real baby is cuter, that she is proud to breastfeed her newborn but wouldn’t do it at the anchor desk and that she wouldn’t be caught dead in that ugly gold blouse!”

For the last few years, a small exclusive group of people have been invited by the Pixel Mafia to attend a special dinner during PhotoPlus Expo (see the PSN Pixel Mafia story from 2005). Who is the Pixel Mafia you may ask? Well, if you have to ask, you really don’t want to know…The Rules of Omertá, ya know?

This year, the Pixel Mafia Dinner was held on Thursday, November 2nd at Jovia Restaurant (135 E 62nd Street near Lexington). The guests were comprised of the “Usual Suspects” as well as some new blood.

Photo Plus East was held again this year at the Javits Center in New York from the 2nd-4th of November. Several members of the Pixel Genius team plus friends were there to take part in the various seminars and events. As I’m typing this, I’m sitting outside the exhibition hall at the Javits Center in New York, watching a stream of photographers, graphic artists and a large group of art school students pass into the packed hall at Photo Plus East. I have always liked this show—the focus on imaging is right up my alley, and I like the mix of digital tools with the traditional stuff like lighting products and wedding portfolios.

The release of Adobe’s Creative Suite 3.0 professional software package next year will be a catalyst for new sales of Apple Computer’s Intel-based Macintosh computers, according to one Wall Street analyst.

The Universal Photographic Digital Imaging Guidlines (UPDIG) working group has announced the release of version 2.0 of their guidelines for the delivery of digital photographs.

Apple has release a Mac OS X Tiger update specifically designed to address certain issues with RAW file support. The Digital Camera RAW Support Update 1.0 is available for both PPC and Universal (MacIntel).

On Tuesday, Adobe is expected to announce the donation in conjunction with the Web 2.0 Conference in San Francisco. The code will form the basis for a new open-source project called Tamarin, which will be governed and manned by developers from Adobe and Mozilla.

As storage moves to the forefront of supercomputer research, advanced technologies from national labs and universities are expected to trickle down to commercial users.

November 06, 2006 (Computerworld) — Discussions about super computer performance almost always center on processing speed — how many gazillion operations per second can be performed by the giant machines. Makers and users of supercomputers also like to brag about things like the number of processors, the amount of memory and the bandwidth available for moving data about.

New York, NY–O’Reilly Media announced the winners of the Photoshop Cook-Off Contest at PhotoPlus Expo 2006. Grand Prize Winner Suzanne Pitts and ten additional winners in five categories were selected from hundreds of submissions created by Photoshop aficionados.

Adobe has publically announced a prerelease of the Adobe Color Engine (ACE) as a stand alone library that can be used by non-Adobe applications.

ACE is built into Adobe products and therefore couldn’t be used by non-Adobe products. This project takes a chunk of ACE (the color conversion engine) and packages it for use by applications that support external color management modules using ColorSync on the Mac OS and ICM2/WCS on Windows.
