At Macworld, Apple announced that a Universal Binary version of Aperture would be made available at the end of March, 2006 for a charge of $49.00.

Aperture owners have balked at having to pay to get a UB build of Aperture and apparently Apple has reversed the decision to charge customers for the upgrade.

In order for applications to run natively on the new Macs with Intel inside, applications must be recompiled using Xcode to incorporate both PPC chip optimizations as well as Intel chip optimizations. Recompiling for Intel is no trivial matter but Apple’s original decision to charge for the UB version of Aperture met with discontent by Aperture users who only recently had shelled out $499.00 for the PPC version of 1.0 and the more recent 1.01 update.

Indications of Apple’s decision to drop the charge is seen on Aperature’s main product page where it states:

A Universal version of Aperture, which will run natively on both PowerPC- and Intel-based Mac computers, will be available before the end of March 2006. New and existing owners of Aperture will be able to crossgrade to the Universal version at no additional charge via Software Update.
