Day 2 – Joplin to Amarillo

Depart Joplin: 8:30 AM
Arrive Amarillo: 4:00 PM
Distance: 477 miles
Average speed: 68 mph (not including Starbucks but including gas stops)
Stops: 1/2 hour stop at Starbucks in Oklahoma City

Nothing of note again aside from seeing the 2nd largest cross
(190 feet tall) in the Western Hemisphere. It’s located just outside of Groom, Texas along I-40. This cross used to be the largest until a larger cross (by eight feet) was built in Effingham, Illinois. I wonder what the guy who built 190 foot cross thinks of the taller one in Effingham? Bummers, huh?

I also found a new Starbucks in Oklahoma City! Fortunately, there’s a Starbucks only 3 miles from my motel in Amarillo. Interesting note, it now seems standard for motels along Interstate highways to have high-speed net access.

The weather forecast indicated clear skies (it was) and a “breeze” out of the South. Well, that “Breeze” was 20-25 MPH. As a crosswind, it wasn’t a pleasent breeze-it was a CROSSWIND! I hate crosswinds…ya gotta lean like you’re in a tight curve, just to go straight. Although, the “breeze” was out of the South East for about 1/2 hour-that was almost like a tailwind. But then the wind shifted to out of the South West and was a quartering crosswind. That’s why I stopped in Amarillo instead of trying to get to Tucumcari, NM.

So far, everybody I’ve talked to in Amarillo sounds exactly like George Bush Jr. and once again, I’ll resist going to The Big Texan, home of the free 72oz steak.

In the event anybody is interested, the suit I’m wearing is a ‘Stich (Aerostich) that offers great protection as well as being waterproof (more or less). Pretty comfortable-even in the heat. Although I tend to pour water over my shoulders inside the jacket to keep cool when it’s really hot. Apple even did a story about me riding on my bike around the South West with my laptop and camera doing a Photoshop composite image of 47 digital captures.

For those keeping score, last night it was steak at Outback Steakhouse. The beer was Fosters. Tonite? Thaiā€“it’s within walking distance. I hope is has a bar.
