Friday Summary / 04-15-2005
Well, we have another week under our belts at PhotoshopNews. The week gone by saw some interesting stories, so in case you missed them, here’s a roundup:
Last Friday, Jeff Schewe posted a review of a must see photography show currently in New York City. Ashes and snow, an impressive show by photographer Gregory Colbert. Read the article if you can’t see the show!
Jeff also posted a story Kai’s Power Tips & Where’s Kai now?. Jeff found a repository for Kai’s old KPT’s and indications that Kai has resurfaced in recent months.
Over last weekend, there were several interesting posts;
Exploring the Creative Edge is an announcement of a major conference for creatives in Santa Fe organized by the Santa Fe Center for Photography.
PhotoshopNews also tracks down Russell Brown, Adobe’s all purpose Photoshop Guru, in the piece Where’s Russell Preston Brown?.
Jeff Schewe posted an easy tip for giving somebody a “photographic diet” in his article Instant Weight Loss – Photoshop Tip
There was an interesting story from Gulf News about a woman journalist–Farzana Wahidy, from Afghanistan and an “experiment” by noted international photographer Reza Deghati, of National Geographic fame. The experiment was to set up an independent non-profit press agency and train both men and women in photojournalism, including writing, photography and Photoshop-which in Afghanistan is a radical new democratic concept, teaching women. See the story: Reflections from Afghanistan. PhotoshopNew contacted the The Aïna Photojournalism Institute and we’ll be doing a follow up story about the institute with photos from the students.
The work week started off with Monday’s posts about Great Lakes Digital Conference does CS2! and the fact that Thomas Knoll, original author of Photoshop and Camera Raw, will be talking about Photoshop CS2 and the new Camera Raw 3.0 at Photoshop Soup2Nuts 2.0. Thomas will be joined by a number of top speakers at this June event.
PhotoshopNews also writes about a legend in the Photoshop community, Bert Monroy, and shows some of his work in Photoshop Creativity Tour – Bert Monroy
There’s a “On news stands this month” notice of an article by Bruce Fraser and Jeff Schewe in this month’s Photoshop User magazine. See Shooting in the RAW – fortunately, the article is about shooting and processing raw camera files and not about nude photographers.
In one of the most hotly debated PhotoshopNews Editorials, Andrew Rodney writes about Adobe Activation – Opinion. It’s not just the opinion that has caused a stir but it’s the most heavily read piece with the most Comments, now numbering 35.
On Tuesday we posted an article Frozen in Time (Scanning the Past), a PBS special from last year about the efforts to preserve and digitize the Bettmann Archives, a collection of about 11 million photographic images now owned by Corbis.
There was also an update about the PhotoImaging & Design Expo due to start next week in San Diego. It seems Adobe will be handing out Photoshop CS2 demo CDs to about 3000 lucky people who will get to see and play with the new update before anybody else (except the alpha and beta testers of course).
On Wednesday Martin Evening, author of Photoshop CS2 for Photographers wrote a nice little tutorial for the new slideshow feature in Bridge. The story, Introducing the new Adobe Bridge Slideshow gives some insight about how valuable this new feature will be to photographers.
Yesterday, there was a reference to a story by CBC News about High tech now crucial to higher learning with additional information for educators about resources from Adobe and recommendations on how to plan for the future of Photoshop upgrades at schools.
(log N = log A + m log x) and Photoshop by Jeff Schewe takes a whimsical look at the usefulness of “Pareto’s Law” (the 80/20 rule) and how to apply it to Photoshop.
